The Anti Snowflake Crowd Is REALLY Mad a Non-Binary Character Exists in ‘Malcolm in the Middle’

It’s difficult for beloved reboots to not feel like nostalgia-driven cash grabs. Recently Scrubs achieved an excellent blend of old vibes and new stories, but there were some fears that Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair wouldn’t hit that sweet spot. The vast majority of those who watched the insane family come back onto our screens would agree those worries were unfounded, with critics and fans alike lauding the four-part series. But, as always, there are a few terrible takes floating about.
The reboot sees Malcolm living happily as a single-father to teen daughter Leah. The secret to his happiness? Never seeing his family, which now includes non-binary sibling Kelly (Vaughan Murrae), who joins their brothers in the madhouse.
Anybody who is familiar with the show and doesn’t have anti-woke keyboard warrior brainrot would have seen this as a continuation of the joke that Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) can’t have girls as children, a bit alluded to in the season four episode “If Boys Were Girls.” And Murrae also identifies as non-binary.
Sadly, some people have bait to drop and followers to engage to keep up their dopamine, so instead see the inclusion of a non-binary character as a threat of some kind.
Double standards and hypocrisy among terminally online conservatives is hardly new, so it isn’t surprising to find it here. People who have built an entire personality based on calling out those who they deem to be easily offended by everything are always the first to complain if they see something on their screens that makes them have to consider any viewpoint beyond their own. In this case, a non-binary character on a television show that famously had a strong woman lead, well-rounded and intelligent black characters, and incredible representation for disabled people at a time where that wasn’t a consideration.
Great work all round from the anti-snowflake snowflakes.
