‘Thank god I was sober and paying attention’: Uber driver allegedly says he wants to charge his car at a station, then misses the exit
The audacity that some people have
As women, we often need to exercise extra caution when navigating public spaces. A woman recently uploaded a TikTok video that highlights the dangers women may face in these environments. Her account also emphasized the importance of acting quickly in such situations and the value of having a witness.
JB (wishihadjessiesgirl) recorded her video while in an Uber late at night, where her driver behaved questionably. She said the driver wanted to pull over for 15-20 minutes to charge his car while she was alone.
The video shows the driver asking JB if he should end the trip. JB responds in the affirmative while also raising concerns that he missed an exit. She said, “Yeah. I don’t want to get into a random parking lot with you. You also just missed the exit, right?”
The driver then seemed to try to assure JB that she was not in danger. He said, “I’m gonna stop at Braintree. It’s. It’s a much better location. It’s the ground level of the garage, South Shore Plaza. And there’s usually people there at night. I just want to make you feel more comfortable. Okay?” However, JB still raised concerns about her situation and asked to be let off.
“REPORT HIM!”
JB’s video received significant attention. More than 2,000 people commented on it. Some commenters on JB’s post recognized the issue and urged JB to take immediate action. Suggestions ranged from calling Uber support to calling the police. One user wrote, “Call the police.” Another said, “REPORT HIM!”
JB did take action against the driver, as highlighted in the caption of her post. She wrote, “Posting this to raise awareness about how scary Ubers can be. Thank god I was sober and paying attention.”
She added, “I called the cops and they met me at a random gas station and never found the uber driver. They checked the local charging stations that he said he was going to and he never went to them. His car was on 43% and we were only 25 minutes away from my house. Absolutely the scariest thing ever.”
A few people shared experiences similar to JB’s in her comments. One person described how her Uber driver acted suspiciously, repeatedly missed exits, and ignored her instructions, forcing her to threaten to call the police. They wrote, “This happened to me with an uber leaving Logan and he did something similar and his voice sounds similar!! He kept missing exits and wouldn’t listen to me until I threatened to call the police and my dad was coming to meet me where I was! So glad you’re ok!!!”
Another person described a cab experience, but it wasn’t with Uber. They wrote, “I once drunkenly sat in the front seat of a yellow cab. When I went to leave, the cabby tried to hug me goodbye. I was dumb and like ok. He licked my face.”
Some people in the comments section raised safety concerns about Uber and suggested choosing women drivers for travel. One user said, “Ladies please request female drivers. My daughter had a Lyft driver ask if she wanted to drink in the car with him before he lets her out.” Another wrote, “I only take woman-only Ubers now and I love it and they are cheaper than the others too, which is a major plus.”
While choosing women-only drivers may seem safer, it’s unfortunate that women often have to take responsibility for their own safety because these apps lack regulation and oversight. JB’s experience isn’t isolated, and we have many cases that show worse outcomes. Unless something is done to fix these shortcomings, incidents such as this will continue to occur.
