Texas woman goes on a first date at a fancy restaurant, only to flee after seeing what he wore: ‘Don’t respect me’
The date ended before it started.
For many, first impressions matter when meeting a potential romantic partner, as they can set the tone for the kind of relationship you’ll have. That was the case for Whitney (@whitthemua), who went on a first date at a fancy restaurant but reconsidered going through with it after seeing what her date was wearing and claimed that it disrespected her.
“Tell me if I’m wrong or tell me if I’m reaching,” Whitney said in a video on TikTok, which has gained over 1.6 million views. Whitney described herself as someone who liked to look presentable whenever she went outside, so when a man asked her to go for drinks and dinner after work at Earls Kitchen + Bar in Plano, Texas, an upscale restaurant, she expected her date to dress appropriately.
“Again, I’m looking presentable,” Whitney said, adding that she wore a black pleated skirt, black top, and heels to the date. “I got my makeup bag with me. Kinda touch up my lip combo. I’m looking presentable, like, I can go and have a drink somewhere.”

Whitney said the man knew where they were dining, as he was the one who supposedly chose the place when he asked her out. But when she arrived at the restaurant’s parking lot, she immediately noticed her date’s seemingly less-than-presentable outfit.
According to Whitney, her date’s outfit was a stark contrast to hers. While Whitney looked professional after coming straight from work, her date reportedly showed up in a muscle shirt, basketball shorts, and slides with white socks. “He’s a handsome dude, but f*** all that,” Whitney said.
Whitney seemingly couldn’t believe what she was seeing and remained stuck inside her car. She clarified that while she didn’t expect him to be “all dolled up in a ball gown,” she still expected him to look decent, given the type of place they were heading to. “If you know that you are going to a certain place and you’re gonna go meet a woman, […] you need to put some clothes on,” she said.
Whitney said she called the man and confronted him about his outfit, although the man appeared to be clueless about his faults. Before she hung up on him, she told him that she was heading home instead, and later ignored his multiple calls and texts.
The man allegedly told Whitney she was rude for ditching him. Whitney, however, argued that he was the one being disrespectful for inviting her out but making little effort with his appearance. “You thought that was okay. […] To me, [it] lets me know that you don’t respect me enough to even put some clothes on,” Whitney said.
She doesn’t plan to lower her standards
Reflecting on the would-be date, Whitney wondered if her standards were too high. But she rationalized that his outfit set the tone for how she would be treated, and she refused to accept the bare minimum in a relationship.
Some viewers agreed that Whitney made the right decision by calling off the date and were dumbfounded that the man would choose such an outfit when meeting someone he was supposedly interested in romantically. “How someone shows up matters to you. how someone appears in public matters to you. You didn’t overreact, he is not what you want,” one viewer wrote.
Another chimed in, saying, “I feel you, because why don’t you care about impressing me??” One viewer pointed out how the outfit was for the wrong occasion. “That’s workout clothes. That’s playing ball with some friends clothes. That’s some hanging out at the house clothes,” the viewer said.
Others, however, felt Whitney handled the incident poorly. “I think you could have handled it differently. Set a standard, but don’t be rude. You were just as wrong as he was,” a viewer wrote. A second added, “Yes. You could have explained that to him. He took the time out to invite you to dinner, was respectful, you judge him based off of his clothes which could easily be changed. What happened to judging people based off their character?”
While viewers remained divided, Whitney stands by her decision to end whatever was brewing between her and the man. She said she had zero “tolerance for no bulls***” and doesn’t have any plans to change her standards any time soon.
