Torvalds’ Finger Gets A Response From Nvidia PR, Nothing Else

Having recovered from Linus Torvalds' epic bird-flipping over the weekend, NVIDIA's PR department issued a statement containing no apology and no promises. Not that we were expecting any.

Linus Torvalds to Nvidia on Lack of Linux Support: “F*ck You.”

If you're used to Windows or OS X, Linux isn't exactly a walk in the park. That said, it's consideriably more viable than it used to be, for power users and newbies alike. Just recently, Linux users got some very happy news when Valve revealed it's bringing its games, and the entire Steam platform to the OS. Not everyone is so Linux-friendly, however, and according to a recent Q&A at Aalto University in Finland, Nvidia is one of the worst offenders. In response to a question from the audience, Linux kernel architect Linus Torvalds described Nvidia as "the single worst company we've ever dealt with." If that's not to-the-point enough for you, he summed it up again in three words. "Nvidia, fuck you."

Get Ready for Linux’s 20th Birthday [Video]

On August 25, 2011, the Linux operating system will celebrate its 20th anniversary, tracing its roots back to an online posting made by creator Linus Torvalds in 1991. Since then, Linux has gone on to become one of the most widely distributed operating systems, powering everything from supercomputers to cellphones. For the uninitiated, this short video takes you through the history of the operating system, and focuses on the unique free licensing that allowed Linux to take off. Even if you've never touched a Linux machine (though, as this video makes clear, you probably have) it's certainly worth a watch. That a free operating system has not only survived but thrived is an outstanding achievement, and worth commemorating. In honor of their anniversary, the Linux Foundation has also released an infographic, marking major milestones along the way. The most surprising is no doubt the origin of Tux, the penguin mascot, so be sure to read on below.

Linus Torvalds Is Now a U.S. Citizen

Linux kernel architect and sexy programmer Linus Torvalds has been living in the United States since he moved here from Finland in 1997, and two of his American-born kids are U.S. citizens by virtue of their birth. (One Slashdot commenter wittily points out that this makes them "GNU/Anchor babies.") But earlier this month, Torvalds announced that he had finally taken the step of becoming a U.S. citizen himself. Writing on the Linux kernel mailing list yesterday, Torvalds offhandedly mentioned that he would test something "in a bit - I need to go do voter registration and socsec update first, though - I became a US citizen last week."

Linus Torvalds: The Nexus One is a “Winner”

Linux inventor and tech pioneer Linus Torvalds has taken a side in the smartphone wars: specifically, the Google Nexus One's side. Writing on his personal blog, he says that while he "generally hates" phones, he sees the Nexus One as "a useful (and admittedly pretty good-looking) gadget":
