During their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi inevitably started discussing their feelings about the porgs. Director Rian Johnson conceded that he knew they would be controversial as soon as he brought them on-set.
“When we would bring the puppet out on-set, that’s when I first got my inkling,” he shared, “because the work would stop on set. And half the crew would be like, ‘Oh, that’s so adorable.’ And half the crew would be kind of giving it the side-eye a little bit.”
The always lovable John Boyega has shocked and betrayed us all, declaring that he did not like the porgs. “I just naturally don’t like them,” he said. “I don’t. I went on the [Millennium] Falcon, and there was a hole, and then there was, like, little Porgs all bunched together, and then there were big ones. I got itchy … They had the puppets blinking and all that kind of stuff. I’m not into it.”
Oscar Isaac, though, spoke up for the puffins of the Star Wars universe. “I love the porgs,” he said. “I’m pro-porg.”
The fact that even the kings of everyone’s favorite Star Wars ship can’t agree on the porgs reveals what a meme-able point of contention they’ve become … but also John Boyega and everyone who hates the porgs is wrong, don’t @ me.
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi arrives in theaters on December 15, porgs and all.
