So JD Vance went to visit the Pope the day before he died (and the internet is having fun)

Ralph Fiennes in Conclave

Pope Francis passed away after a recent health scare. Before he died, he celebrated Easter Sunday and met JD Vance. So you know the internet is having fun with the Vance aspect of this story.

Francis’ death comes at an interesting time in our world. Pretend Catholic JD Vance has tried to make that aspect of himself his entire personality (as if our last President was not a Catholic from birth). We also are all obsessed with Conclave after the 2024 film starring Ralph Fiennes and so you know the jokes instantly popped up.

But the Vance of it all was funny to navigate this morning. Vance shared his thoughts on the passing of Pope Francis on X, writing “I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill. But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.”

It did all lead to many on X posting about Vance’s meeting with the Pope.

Now I do think it is important that I make it clear that I call JD Vance a fake Catholic because that’s what he is. Unless you grow up with the weight of Catholic guilt on your shoulders, I am going to side eye your choice. But hey, I guess he felt out on feeling guilty and going to confession.

Vance meeting the Pope though wasn’t easy. Pope Francis was not a fan of the Trump Administration. So he met with Vance after pushback. Which has led to other fun jokes about the Vice President.

Look, I feel guilty for laughing at the jokes. I come from a long line of Catholics on both side of my genetics. Italian, Irish, and Scottish? That’s just par for the course. But it is kind of funny that everyone is honing in on the fact that Vance met the Pope and then he died hours later.

But I also think it is important to note that the Pope used his time with Vance to stand up for immigrants to the Trump Administration. That is, as Andrew Guidarelli points out on X, what a true Catholic is. Not what Vance pretends Catholicism is.

So get all your Conclave and JD Vance tweets out now.
