Sister Being “Kidnapped” Mid-Wedding Is Being Called “Disgusting” by Some TikTok Users
It's not your typical funny wedding moment.
A wedding video meant to show a lighthearted surprise moment has sparked arguments about whether some old traditions have had their time and become something uncomfortable in modern society. The clip that caused the conflicting opinions was shared by TikTok user @jessmneimne, and shows the poster’s sister being “kidnapped” during a Russian-Lebanese wedding celebration as part of a Caucasian custom.
According to the captions and comments from the user, the wedding brought together guests from several cultural backgrounds, and the attendees wanted to bring some of their own customs to the proceedings. This includes a moment during the wedding when a woman is unexpectedly grabbed and taken away to be tracked down and “saved.”
Although the moment comes as a surprise to the person eventually chosen to be whisked away, everyone else in the room is usually aware that it is going to happen to someone, so it doesn’t come as a total shock.
“It was all planned, everyone was in on it except for my sister (aka the person being k!dnapped),” the poster explained in response to several comments. “The tradition is basically they k!dnap a girl they want to marry and the groom has to find a way to retrieve her back. we decided to keep the tradition as a funny memory rather than portraying actual marriage, hope this clears it up.”
Some People Think Old Traditions Should Stay in the Past
Once the video started circulating, the reactions came quickly, and they didn’t all agree that the moment was a “funny memory” rather than something that could be traumatic given the custom’s history. Arguing that it is a strange thing to restage for laughs regardless of how consensual this particular version was, several users called it “weird,” “disgusting,” and “disturbing at a modern wedding.”
One comment put it bluntly, asking what the tradition’s origins could possibly be “other than” a practice that caused real suffering for the women involved. Bride kidnapping, sometimes called bride stealing or ala kachuu, have been seen as a huge issue in some countries like Kyrgyzstan.
While some have now turned this into the consensual nod to history seen in the shared video, the line between the two is clearly very fine for some. It’s the same tension that surrounds any tradition dressed up as harmless fun when its roots are anything but, and one that plays out on TikTok with striking regularity.
Despite the original poster returning several times to reiterate that the moment seen in the video was agreed to by everyone, it still hasn’t quite satisfied the doubters, and more split opinions have continued to surface in recent comments. It’s a debate that has flared up before whenever a real marriage custom collides with a modern, global audience that has no shared context for it.
As is often the case with viral content, it is unlikely the divide will be bridged at any point. TikTok users from several generations have very different views when it comes to how important historical context is to traditions like this. While those who were actually present at the wedding are all happy with what transpired, those who have no connection to it whatsoever will always have their say when footage of private events is shared online.
