Simon Pegg, Nick Frost Working on an Alien Apocalypse Comedy With Edgar Wright

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. Yes.

In news that will make a very large number of people super happy, Simon Pegg has said that he and and frequent collaborators Nick Frost and Edgar Wright are working out a new screenplay for an “alien apocalypse comedy” tentatively titled The World’s End. And in a spectacular feat of creativity and endurance, this screenplay will be finished after Pegg films one movie and before he suits up as Scottie for the sequel to Star Trek. Actually, he might have more time than originally planned, since that doesn’t even have a screenplay yet. But this is great news for fans of all things Pegg-Frost-Wright. And it’s been inspired by ice cream this whole time.

According to Pegg, this new story will be a bit of a departure from his previous collaborations with Wright — at least that’s what he’s shooting for:

“In writing our new thing, Edgar and me have been very determined that we’re going to start in earnest very, very soon to not just do the same thing again, to do something very different. Not to the point of alienating people who want something, but just give people something new and something different. You can’t just stay where you are forever. You have to mutate to survive, and I think we’re going to make sure that we do that. I’d hate to become stale and predictable. People are already making films that are kind of like the sort of thing we might do. I want to stay a little bit ahead of the curve at least.”

You may recall a recent alien-themed release called Paul, which was written by and starred Pegg and Frost, but not Wright. Greg Mottola directed that one. Wright must have felt left out of that alien scene, though he was keeping busy with a little flick called Scott Pilgrim vs. The World at the time. Although, a movie about an alien apocalypse and the end of the world does not seem to indicate friendly aliens like Paul, so now The World’s End can be the Alien to Paul‘s E.T.

Interestingly enough, this third movie will mark the end of what the trio have been calling “The Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy,” also the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy. Cornetto is a brand of ice cream in the UK (and the US) that at some point was available in the colors red, blue, and green. (I attempted to find pictures of this in the name of journalism, but was unable. But I still got to look at pictures of ice cream. Win-Win.) The World’s End will be the “green” installment of this trilogy — Shaun of the Dead was red, Hot Fuzz was blue. See?

Delicious. And who better to make us laugh about the end of the world than these guys? They’ve already saved us from zombies. Surely we can all find a way to live with Earth-invading aliens too.
