Peter Thiel has publicly criticized the staffing choices within the current Trump administration. The Silicon Valley heavyweight argues that the White House is currently defined by a dangerous lack of intelligence among its ranks. According to Reality Tea, Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal and Palantir, shared these blunt observations during a recent interview with German journalist Mathias Döpfner on the MD Meets podcast.
It is a notable shift for a man who served as one of the earliest and most prominent Silicon Valley backers for the president during the 2016 campaign. Back then, Thiel donated $1.25 million through direct contributions and super PACs to support the effort. Now, he suggests that the current administration has fallen into a trap of its own making.
Thiel explained that the two administrations led by the president have struggled with opposite issues. He noted that the first administration was plagued by internal fighting because the staff could not agree on a path forward. He believes the second administration attempted to overcorrect for that specific mistake. The result, according to Thiel, is an administration staffed by “not very smart, but very loyal people.”

The tech investor’s remarks to Döpfner – who is also the CEO of Axel Springer – arrive ahead of the midterm elections in November 2026. According to the New York Post, Thiel recently received the Axel Springer Award 2026 in Berlin, which highlights his continued influence in global tech and political circles. His comments reference specific job interview questions that were previously described by civil servants as loyalty tests. A judge blocked these requirements earlier this month.
When asked to analyze the president’s record, Thiel suggested that a truly accurate assessment would require another decade of perspective. He remains sour on the short-term political prospects for the country. He actually predicted that Democrats will likely triumph in the upcoming midterm elections and warned that the far-left branch of the Democratic Party could potentially take the White House in 2028.
Thiel stated, “I would put the odds at roughly 50% that a democratic socialist wins the presidency in 2028.” He argued that the Republican Party has always occupied the anti-establishment space in American politics. A takeover by Democratic Socialists would be catastrophic for the country, he said. He stressed that when 70% of millennials identify as pro-socialist, the political establishment needs to rethink how it responds.
The billionaire further argued that simply dismissing young people as brainwashed or entitled is a failing strategy. He pointed to student debt and unaffordable housing as primary drivers for this shift. He warned that if you continue to proletarianize young people, they will naturally turn toward socialism.
The White House has pushed back against these characterizations
White House spokesman Davis Ingle stated, “No one can dispute the fact that President Trump has created one of the most robust coalitions in political history with the MAGA movement, and the president understands how to communicate with them.” Ingle further emphasized that the president remains the unequivocal leader and best messenger for the Republican Party. He pointed to tax cuts, prescription drug programs, and border policies as proof of the administration’s success.
Beyond politics, Thiel also used the interview to criticize the growing trend of AI doomerism. He pushed back against calls from industry leaders like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to slow down the development of artificial intelligence. Thiel argued that the cure might be far worse than the disease. He believes that global calls for a pause will only result in empty international summits.
He warned that while the West slows itself down, authoritarian rivals will continue to accelerate their own capabilities. Furthermore, he suggested that issuing moral regulatory statements is strategically equivalent to giving a gift to the Chinese Communist Party. He joked that the Communist Party of China is not going to listen to the Pope. Pope Leo XVI has consistently spoken out against the harmful impact of AI.
Thiel is skeptical of the necessity of a one-world government to regulate AI
The billionaire noted that such a structure would be an overreach that could lead to even greater problems. He concluded that the idea of a peaceful, zero-growth world without AI is a fantasy. He warned that the alternative to rapid development is not a stable society, but a dangerous stagnation.
Thiel’s perspective remains a flashpoint for debate as the tech industry and the political establishment continue to navigate an unpredictable future. His comments come as a shock, considering his long history of being a Trump supporter. Thiel is also known to have taken Vice President J.D. Vance under his wing before he entered politics.
