If you love Peter Pan, or vlog-style storytelling a la The Lizzie Bennett Diaries – or both! – you’ve likely been watching The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy. Well, Season 2 premieres June 12th, and The Mary Sue has learned exclusively that the role Mr. Smee will be played by Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World (you saw him as one of the Boyfriends) and New Girl‘s (you saw him run off with Taylor Swift) Satya Bhabha.

But this isn’t your usual take on the classic character! First of all, as you can clearly see – not an old, balding, chubby white dude:

Secondly, this version of Smee is LGBTQ! This facet of the character was first revealed in The Advocate, when they covered Peter and Wendy‘s successful Season 2 IndieGoGo campaign:

Described as “New Girl with fairies,” this fun reimagining of the beloved characters from Neverland includes Jim Beaver of Supernatural fame as Mr. Darling and plans to expand its cast with the inclusion of out and proud pirate Smee in the upcoming season.

In fact, in the exclusive Season 2 photo posted above, he’s actually looking at the new object of his affection! But who is it?! You’ll have to watch to find out.

Meanwhile, Bhabha is thrilled to be joining the cast of this popular web series, as he recently told The Mary Sue:

Doesn’t everyone have a Peter Pan fantasy?! I figured, if this can help me stay young forever I’m in!

In all seriousness though, I was drawn to the project by the wonderful energy of the cast and creatives. There’s a current of joy and excitement that courses through the veins of this show which is very infective. Also, I haven’t worked much in the new media sphere and was very interested to learn more about this world and these kids of creators. I had just launched my own web-series (all episodes now available at www.mealswithmary.com!) so wanted to see how these seasoned pros handled the production and promotion process.

On a personal level, I find the role of Smee to be very pleasurable and positive. I think he’s has a real heart of gold and an excitable innocence about him that resonates with me and my character. I loved the design of the show and felt that the look of Smee perfectly encapsulated his character. It was a real pleasure to get to be silly with these awesome people and I’m so excited to get to know and interact with the hugely supportive and committed Peter and Wendy fan-base.

We’re thrilled that Smee is going to add a whole new dimension to The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy, and can’t wait for the premiere June 12th!
