The first full trailer for season two of Marvel’s Runaways has landed, picking up right where season one left off as the titular runaways finally escaped their supervillain parents. The teens find refuge in a cave in Griffith Park, which they dub The Hostel. Meanwhile, their parents convene in a secret lair where they plan to track down their missing kids.
Executive producer Stephanie Savage said of the new season, “This year is much more the cat-and-mouse [game] and the two sides going to war.” Savage also discussed the origins of the Hostel, saying “It was originally built in the 1920s by a magician. It was lived in for many years, [but] perhaps sometime in the ’60s or ’70s there was an earthquake or mudslide that made it uninhabitable. We wanted it to be our equivalent of, like, the Batcave.”
“It’s the biggest set that Marvel Television has ever built,” said executive producer Josh Schwartz. “When [comic co-creator] Brian K. Vaughan came to the set for the first time, he had tears in his eyes.”
The trailer includes some action scenes of the teens fighting their parents, with Nico Minoru saying, “We’re gonna figure out how to use our powers together, as a team.” Teamwork seems to be a major theme of the new season, as the Runaways must come together to face off against the Pride. But there may be a mole in the group, as fans of the comic series may remember. We’ll have to wait and see if the mole storyline will be the same as it was in the comics.
We see scenes of Karolina bonding with her alien father Jonah and exploring her mysterious rainbow powers, as well as the massive hole in the ground that the Pride dug in the finale of season one. And we also get another glimpse of Karolina and Nico’s love fest, which is sure to satisfy Deanoru shippers.
We meet a new character, Topher (Jan Luis Castellanos) who also possesses powers. Topher is a vampire street criminal in the comics series, but it is unclear whether or not he will retain those attributes in the show.
The trailer leans into one of the most compelling themes of the series, namely children undoing the sins of their parents. The series works as a handy parallel to the rise of politically engaged teens protesting the corrupt and self-serving policies of the powers that be. Woke teens will save the world, y’all.
Runaways returns to Hulu on December 21st.
