Beloved actor and director Rob Reiner has passed away
Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer died in their California home on Sunday night. The news was reported by Variety, and fans on the Internet immediately leapt to process such a profound loss. Reiner was the beloved actor, director, producer and screenwriter behind a number of film fan all-timers over the course of his career. Movies like When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and This Is Spinal Tap carry some of his magic in them. He was 78 at the time of his death. Police are currently investigating motives and family members.
In a statement to CNN, a spokesperson for the Reiner family asked for privacy in this tough time. The words in their chosen statement lament the tragic passing of this couple. From the spokesperson: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Needless to say, the tributes have been pouring in from different corners of social media. The Screen Actors Guild offered their thoughts after leaning the news. As far as 20th Century pop culture goes, Reiner had his Fingerprints all over the theatrical landscape that most millennials, Gen Xers, and Zoomers enjoyed. Union president Sean Austin said, “Rob Reiner is one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television. The impact he made on American culture simply can’t be overstated.”

As of this morning, Los Angeles Police Department has Nick Reiner in custody. Polic suspect the 32 year old son of Rob and Michelle Reiner as a possible perpetrator in this grisly tragedy. Authorities arrested Nick Reiner on Sunday evening, and booked him on a felony charge early this morning. Many sources have noted his former history with law enforcement and addiction. California Governor Gavin Newsom had to offer a statement on the passing of Reiner and his wife Michelle. Through decades of contributions to not only film and television but American life writ large, the politician views Reiner as a model citizen for the Hollywood industry. This is more evidence of regular everyday people, and celebrities trying to grapple with the loss of a true titan in this small corner of the world. It’s small solace on days like today, but it truly feels like anyone who loved movies had a soft spot for this man, and is heartbroken by the developments.
Newsom recalls, “Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love. With projects as wide-ranging as ‘The Princess Bride’ to ‘A Few Good Men.’ His boundless empathy made his stories timeless. Teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others – and encouraging us to dream bigger.”
