Real Steel has sort of flown quietly through it’s production process, at least, it has for a movie that somehow tries to combine the seedy underbelly of bare-knuckle boxing with heartwarming family fare and giant robots punching the snot out of each other. Also, Hugh Jackman.
And what it this trailer reminds me most of, both in with the sports theme and the “kid has to give dad a self-esteem boost” theme, is the kids sports films of my own childhood, like Angels in the Outfield or Little Big League, and if it keep pushing that button… yeah, I’ll probably check it out.
But lets be honest, the reason it’s been quiet is because it’s an “original” concept, which is to say that it’s not actually original, it’s just based on something most people aren’t familiar with or invested in as a fandom: a 1956 short story of the same name, by Richard Matheson, a guy who’s also responsible for I Am Legend, What Dreams May Come, and the episode of The Twilight Zone where William Shatner thinks that… theres… SOMEthingonthewing.
