Pete Hegseth Keeps Trying to Fire Generals, But One “Isn’t Going Anywhere”

Pete Hegseth keeps ousting different military leadership. But one stubborn army member says that he isn’t leaving anytime soon. The Washington Post reports that Dan Driscoll is staying put for the time being.
Last week saw Hegseth forcing an exit for the Army’s top general and two other senior officials in a shocking move. General Randy George was relieved of duty amidst the global conflict with Iran. It’s weird timing for such a decision, but what about the Donald Trump administration has been normal in 2026? Something to chew on as we move through the rest of the year.
George was tabbed to be the chief of the Army until 2027. However, Hegseth saw fit to pull the plug well in advance. Driscoll saw what was fomenting and decided to go on an offensive before any of that could take root. He offered a statement to the Post after the internal clashes with Hegseth and said that they could coexist together.
Tensions are high all over the government right now as the Iran situation looms ever larger or over routine government decision making and strategy. It doesn’t help that Hegseth’s brand of leadership hinges on total fealty to the causes of the Trump administration. (These loyalty tests were forecast while the president was on the campaign trail this time around.) Anyone saying they’re surprised by this turn of events in 2026 either wasn’t paying attention or is being intellectually dishonest on purpose.
Hegseth tries to get rid of another Military leader

Despite all that turbulence inside the walls of the Pentagon and beyond, Driscoll remained steadfast about his capacity to serve the United States military. Hegseth might be making moves to block promotions for different Army officers. But, there’s reason to believe that the regime in charge wanted some of those officials gone anyway. It’s all cloak and dagger in a way that shouldn’t make you feel good about the military’s status in all of this upheaval around the world. The Army’s heralded figure aligned with Trump when asked for comment this week.
“Serving under President Trump has been the honor of a lifetime and I remain laser focused on providing America with the strongest land fighting force the world has ever seen,” Driscoll told reporters. “I have no plans to depart or resign as the Secretary of the Army.”
Interestingly, the Trump administration has put their support behind Driscoll’s. There’s a difference between kicking out different workers that you didn’t have an affinity for in the first place and Hegseth trying to make the universal decision to toss out a favorite son of the Trump administration. Simply put, he’s not going to win that battle, and needs to probably bark up another tree in that regard.
Trump backs Driscoll

This isn’t just us trying to read tea leaves either. There’s a written statement from the Trump administration and the fact that Driscoll is still in his post after going to the media with a comment of his own. Usually, those types of leaks would be punished in the public sphere. But, when you have the ear of the person in charge, you’re not as worried about those optics.
The White House’s spokeswoman argued that Donald Trump “effectively restored a focus on readiness and lethality across our military with the help of leaders like Secretary Driscoll,” as read by Anna Kelly. “The extraordinary talent of the United States Army is on full display as our warfighters meet or exceed all of their benchmarks under Operation Epic Fury and Iran’s military capabilities diminish more every day.”
