Ordinary flight descended into chaos after one passenger became restless and tried to open emergency exit door before inexplicably dying

A passenger aboard a plane travelling from Nairobi to Lagos has died after reportedly becoming restless and aggressive during the flight. According to several witnesses, the unnamed individual even tried to open the emergency exit, causing mass panic amongst the other passengers onboard the plane. Several POVs of the incident have since been posted to TikTok.

One video posted to TikTok, which has received almost 5 million views, shows a man appearing rather restless as he stands in the aisle of a Kenya Airways flight. The caption reads: “One minute he was standing, and the next moment, he was a corpse.” Other passengers on board the plane are seen looking back anxiously.

Another video, posted by “The Adekunbi,” showed her horrified reaction to the events as well as the surrounding chaos on the plane around her. The in-video text claimed that Adekunbi and “100+ passengers nearly lost our lives because of a single person who [tried] to open the exit door mid flight.” She claimed that the individual was tied down by others on board the plane.

Adekunbi’s video was reposted by “afroteenhq” along with a caption claiming that the man died on the flight. It’s unclear how close the man got to actually opening the plane door.

An investigation into the incident is underway

An official statement from Kenya Airways on X confirmed that the passenger had died around 20 minutes before the flight was due to land in Lagos on Tuesday, October 6. Crew administered first aid but were not able to save the passenger.

“We convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused,” the statement says. “Kenya Airways is providing the necessary support in close coordination with the deceased’s family, local authorities, and aviation regulators.”

According to Premium Times, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu said the passenger had been picked up in Madagascar and was being taken back to Nigeria after Madagascar customs had denied him entry into the country.

“When he got into the aircraft, he became restless and aggressive,” Achimugu said. The passenger also allegedly tried to gain entry into the cockpit before trying to open the rear door. He was tied down by others on board, and when the plane arrived at its destination, the man was pronounced dead. Earlier this year, a passenger on board a flight to Chicago also tried to open the emergency door mid-flight.

The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but Muhammed Adeola, the spokesperson for Airport Command of the Nigeria Police Force said that the man became unable to breathe after being tied down. Police are investigating the incident and have spoken to members of the flight crew.
