Pregnant woman posts video in tears after her OB accidentally reveals baby’s gender. Then came the hate comments: ‘It’s not that deep’

A pregnant woman posted a video of herself in tears after her obstetrician accidentally gave her the gender reveal. The issue? Her commenters didn’t think it was a big deal and hated her for it.
TikToker Bre O’Brien (@breobrien__) expressed a small amount of disappointment with the gender reveal on her public page. The content creator had previously documented an ordeal with infertility and underwent IVF. For her, the news was disappointing simply because she didn’t have her full support system with her.
What started as a simple post expressing her feelings led to a number of negative reactions, though. In total, the post received more than 630,000 views. Of those viewers, a barrage of commenters left disparaging remarks about her reaction.
Hern Fertility Journey
O’Brien went on an IVF journey with her husband, which she documented on her page. She experienced natural pregnancies, miscarriages, and a number of complications, which were harrowing for her and her partner.
At the start, the TikToker posted a video of her husband injecting her each month in the hopes of having a child. She later got pregnant two different times with “IVF babies,” and told her audience that she had six more embryos on ice before her recent pregnancy.
IVF can be emotionally harrowing and physically difficult. For one, hopeful parents have to deal with a litany of side effects directly related to IVF injections. The treatment can cause a number of additional hormonal issues and even Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). For those already struggling with infertility, the treatment itself can be painful and overwhelming.
On top of that, being pregnant can also be a very emotional and difficult experience. It’s estimated that around seven to nine percent of women in the United States have depression during pregnancy. Physical stress, fatigue, and metabolic changes also affect pregnant individuals’ moods and cause mood swings.
For that reason, it wasn’t necessarily out of left field for O’Brien to cry when getting the news about her third baby’s gender. Commenters, though, didn’t seem to think so.
She gets hate for her reaction
O’Brien recalled on Instagram that her OB accidentally told her the information over the phone. She later filmed a video of herself in her car, quietly crying because of the gender reveal.
As she recalled in her original post, “I don’t have gender disappointment but I am disappointed to not find out with my husband – even though I didn’t want to find out at all, I still love my OB.”
Commenters, though, weren’t pleased that the TikToker openly expressed sadness online. Some called it “not that deep,” while others thought crying over it was a tad too far. O’Brien had to limit viewers from adding their thoughts by turning off her comments. Other viewers on her later posts later recalled reporting nasty or mean messages the TikTok post received.
O’Brien explained the decision to limit her video’s comments in a later update. “I want my videos to stay in my safe little community that I’ve created, because if you know nothing about me you would know that I’ve documented everything, from my infertility to my IVF…”
She added, “I am not one to delete comments or to block people, I actually just don’t care nothing gets to me, but this is a safe space for me, so I have filtered out words in my comments.”
Viewers react
Many viewers were horrified that O’Brien had to limit her comments. They recalled seeing the “floodgate” of trolls that O’Brien described.
“As you should,” one commenter said. “It’s crazy that people don’t understand why you were sad that this moment you wanted to share with hubby, had been taken away from you.”
Another person told the TikToker she wasn’t alone in her reaction. “I cry if my coffee isn’t made correctly when I’m on my period. It’s so weird to judge people,” they said.
