Things We Saw Today: Nick Offerman Joins Amazon’s A League of Their Own Series

Recommended Videos

Now this is a home run: Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) will be joining the cast of Amazon’s A League of Their Own series. Offerman will be playing Casey “Dove” Porter, the coach of the Rockford Peaches. The erstwhile Ron Swanson will play a former Cubs pitcher, made famous because his forkball killed a dove in mid-air in the middle of a game. Described as “inspiring and charismatic,” Dove was set to be a major MLB star before an arm injury sidelined his career. Now he’s looking to make a career comeback by coaching the Peaches.

Tom Hanks played the role of team coach in the 1992 classic film as Jimmy Dugan, a fictionalized version of former AAGPBL Fort Wayne Daisies coach and MLB Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx. Offerman joins previously announced cast members Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), Chanté Adams (Bad Hair), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Famalam), Kelly McCormack (Letterkenny), Roberta Colindrez (Vida), and Priscilla Delgado (Julieta). Jacobson and Will Graham (Mozart in the Jungle) created and executive produce the series, with Jamie Babbit (But I’m a Cheerleader) directing the pilot.

Nick Offerman is great in everything he does, so obviously we’re excited. Nobody does “gruff but supportive” better than Offerman, and we’re excited to see what he brings to the already stacked series. The show is inspired by the beloved film, but will explore themes of race and sexuality that weren’t addressed in the original.
