NATO won’t play along with Donald Trump’s dreams, so now he’s planning an illegal move

During a recent press conference at the Oval Office, Donald Trump, sitting alongside Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin, who was visiting, spoke of his plans to possibly leave NATO. His reasons for doing the same? He believed his NATO allies were not being supportive enough of his plans. His plans in question? Waging wars in foreign countries.
Just a few days ago, Donald Trump was on the verge of begging his NATO allies to support him and the US in their efforts to keep the Strait of Hormuz up and running because Iran blocked it for the US and their allies. Two days later, he is now saying he does not require support from his NATO allies and may be looking for an out, as he does not want to pay trillions of dollars as a member of the committee.
Donald Trump says he can exit NATO if he wants to
Answering a question about the US’s current relationship with NATO, which was directed at him during his recent Oval Office press conference, Donald Trump said he is very disappointed with NATO and is not ruling out reconsidering his relationship with the committee, given recent developments. Talking about the US’s war in Iran, Trump said that a lot of NATO allies did not push against the idea of the US attacking Iran, but since they started attacking and the development has progressed, they have shown a lack of interest in helping the US out.
Talking about the lack of support from NATO allies, Trump said that the US had been paying trillions of dollars to the committee over the years, and even after that, if they were not extending help to him and the country when it needs then he would have to rethink the relationship they share. He also spoke about possibly leaving NATO, saying he wouldn’t need Congress’s permission to take that step. However, this is completely untrue. In fact, he would need the permission of Congress if he wanted to take such a step, because, under a law passed in December 2023, the U.S. President would require Congressional approval, a two-thirds Senate vote, or separation legislation passed by Congress to withdraw from NATO.
Donald Trump says that Ukraine would have been crushed if the US had not helped it
While Trump did mention that he was open to reviewing the US relationship with NATO, he did reveal that he did not “currently” have anything in mind, but said that he was not “exactly thrilled when the US helped them with Ukraine, which, according to him, would have been over in one day if the US did not help them.
Speaking about Ukraine’s defence system, Trump stressed that they had the best equipment, which was provided to them by the United States by “Sleepy” Joe Biden without any charge.
