Michael Douglas joined the MCU to try out green screen acting. Then he checked his contract and realized one major problem

Always read the fine print.

Michael Douglas recently shared a surprising detail about his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to PEOPLE, the actor wanted to leave the franchise after his second Ant-Man film but the studio refused his request to kill off his character, Hank Pym. Douglas spoke about this during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on October 19, 2026. Host Josh Horowitz asked if the rumors about his exit request were true.

“I would have been killed off after the second one, but they wouldn’t let me,” Douglas jokingly told the host. Douglas, 82, first joined the Marvel universe back in 2015. He played Hank Pym, who served as the original Ant-Man. Paul Rudd played Scott Lang in that film. Evangeline Lilly played Hope Van Dyne.

The trio then appeared together in the 2018 sequel. They also returned for the 2023 film titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Douglas even made a cameo in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame.

Douglas said his foray into superhero movies started after a period of reflection

The actor beat cancer in 2011. He said he had worked on the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra and felt like he needed to try something new. He wanted to explore genres he had not touched before. He first looked into comedy. That led him to work on the Netflix series The Kominsky Method, with TV show creator Chuck Lorre and costar Alan Arkin there. Then, the idea of a green screen movie came to him.

“I [told] all my agents, ‘I’d like to do one of these green screen movies to see what they’re like,’ you know? Because it’s amazing,” the two-time Oscar winner said. He noted the unique nature of that filming style. “It’s nothing, just a green screen and they show you the pictures of what it’s gonna look like when it’s all finished.” He admitted that he was surprised by the difficulty of that work. It was not as easy as it looked to him from the outside.

“It’s hard acting, man,” Douglas said during the podcast. “It’s coming at you here, this and that, you know…” He praised his costars during the experience. “We did Ant-Man and Paul Rudd was a wonderful actor – a lovely group – but then you can’t get out of it,” Douglas said. He jokingly agreed with Horowitz that he should have read the fine print in his contract.

That was not the only time Douglas tried to exit the series

According to Variety, he also spoke about his desire to leave during a 2024 appearance on The View. He specifically asked Marvel to kill him off in the third movie. He even pitched a creative way for his character to go. “[Getting killed off] actually was my request for the third one,” Douglas said at the time.

“I said I’d like to have a serious [death], with all these great special effects. There’s got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects.”

He felt that would be a fitting end for Hank Pym. Despite his creative pitch, the studio did not take him up on the offer. Douglas does not expect to return for a fourth film in that series now. The actor has become much more selective with his work lately. His last major starring role was in an Apple TV miniseries in 2024. He played Benjamin Franklin in that project. He also filmed a small part in a movie by Oliver Stone called White Lies.

Douglas’ life has changed significantly over the last few years

The actor continues to work, but he prioritizes his family time more. “I haven’t slowed down but I spend my time very differently now. I’ve traded the adventures for making movies for adventures with my family,” Douglas. He makes sure to schedule at least one major trip every year. His wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, enjoys capturing these moments. Douglas says she is the family photographer. She records every detail for the future.

She even gave him a fun title for his planning skills. Catherine Zeta-Jones “has declared [him] the world’s best travel agent and she is the momarazzi, recording every last detail for posterity,” he continued. Fans who want to know more about his life can check out Douglas’ new memoir titled One Helluva Ride. It is currently available for purchase.
