Florida man goes on a date to high-end Miami restaurant with ‘fancy’ woman. Then she orders the wine

You don’t need to be a wine enthusiast to enjoy a glass or two. Swirl, sniff, sip, and then decide if it’s drinkable. The best part? You don’t really need to know anything about wine, just what tastes good.

But when you decide to play wine connoisseur, you need to pay at least a little attention to the rules. Or else, your date might learn something about you that you’re not yet ready to share. At least that was the case for Miami-based Zack Goldwasser (@zackgoldwasser3) and his “fancy” date.

What Happened On This Date?

“I was going on a date with a girl who was,” he pauses, “significantly fancier than me,” says Goldwasser. He describes himself as laid back but still fully capable of comporting himself appropriately in polished situations.

The couple ends up deciding on one of Miami’s most exclusive restaurants. Goldwasser admits that maybe he took her there because he was trying to “keep up” with her. After all, “everything about her was just a little higher class than what I am used to,” he says.

But that’s what makes this “the best dating story,” he promises.

Then A Mishap

On their date, one of the first things that happens is an appetizer mishap. The dish comes with a small carafe of soy sauce, but Goldwasser is having trouble figuring out which side is the handle, and which is the spout, so he can pour it out properly.

Figuring he’s got a 50/50 shot of being right, he said, “I’m trying to be competent.” But he gets it wrong and, giggling, she corrects him.

Next, it’s the real challenge: time to order drinks.

His date wants wine, but can’t decide between two different bottles. So she asks to taste them. Goldwasser says she starts doing the whole wine tasting song and dance: “Like spinning the cup around and sniffing it, doing the little taste, and getting all the flavors.” Goldwasser is sitting back, thinking, “Oh God, this is not what I am used to.”

After tasting both glasses, there is a clear winner, and a clear loser. “Ugh, I hate that one,” she says of the first glass. Then takes a sip from the second one, “Mmm, I love that one!”

The waiter returns to see how the wine selection is going. She tells him one is disgusting, but that the other she really likes.

According to Goldwasser, the server looks at her and says, “Ma’am, those are the same wine. I thought you guys both wanted to try it.”

“When I tell you, I was so excited she made a fool of herself like that […] I immediately felt comfortable,” Goldwasser says with a grin on his face.

What Did People Think Of Their Date?

The comments section is positively gleeful with this example of humans being utterly absurd. “Acting pretentious is a huge deal breaker. Laughing at human foibles is sexy all day long,” writes Onesoldiersmom (@onesoldiersmom).

Kerry’s Cases (@kerryscases), meanwhile, is ready with a little pretension of her own: “I have to tell you I did cringe when you twice said cup of wine. Just for future dates, it’s a glass of wine lol.”

Then Miss M (@missmireille) commented on the server’s behavior. “My only take away from this story is you had a horrible waiter. He should have just said good choice and left to get the wine,” they wrote.

User Madchatter (@madchatter.tea) has a slightly different (and kinder) take: “We’re all pretending to be adults,” they say.

Does It Really Impact The Way Wine Tastes If You Swirl And Sniff It?

It is really easy to poke fun at the oftentimes theatrical-seeming articulations of oenophiles, aspiring or otherwise. But it does beg the question: does all that movement make the wine taste better?

The short answer is: yes. Yes, it does. Because the swirling movement helps to let the wine “breathe”  and open up by introducing oxygen and releasing the flavor compounds. But all wines don’t necessarily benefit from agitation.

For sparkling wines, resist the urge to swirl because if you do, you’ll just release all the carbon dioxide and end up with flat champagne. You should gently decant older wines like old Bordeaux. Because if you move them too much, you risk destroying delicate aromas and flavors.

But for most wines, a little sniff and swirl can really release the nuances of the flavors. It’s just up to your palate to detect the differences. Or as this date proved, the similarities.
