Massachusetts Woman Empties Her Handbag at TJ Maxx to Gift it to the Cashier, Claims the Exchange Was Written in the Stars: ‘I Know That Sounds Crazy’
Sounds like an uncanny coincidence, but it definitely feels meant to be.

Cleaning out your wardrobe is usually a ruthless exercise in tossing out items you haven’t touched in months. But now and then, an inexplicable gut instinct tells you to hang onto an item just a little bit longer. For Massachusetts creator Kaylee (@kay.oaky), that instinct allegedly led to a heartwarming moment of serendipity at her local T.J. Maxx.
In a recent TikTok video, Kaylee shared how a series of odd, intuitive choices culminated in a spontaneous act of kindness. Things began with her pairing an out-of-place handbag with a summer outfit, but took a turn into a moment of unexpected alignment.
She claimed that she had considered tossing away the handbag just the night before. However, it reportedly turned out to be the exact accessory a young T.J. Maxx cashier had been searching for. Taking it as a sign from the universe, Kaylee allegedly emptied her handbag then and there and gifted it to the cashier in a heartbeat. But not everyone walks into stores to give away their personal accessories, as one woman learned the hard way at Goodwill.
An intuitive gut feeling saved Kaylee’s brown handbag from the donation pile
The chain of events allegedly began the evening before when Kaylee was clearing out her closet. She spent long hours deciding which clothes and accessories to donate. During the exercise, she came across a thrifted brown crocodile-print Liz Claiborne purse that she had owned for years but rarely used.
Kaylee explained that she was on the verge of tossing it into the discard pile. However, just then, a gut feeling urged her to keep it around to see if she would style it in the autumn. The next morning, temperatures hit 80 degrees, and Kaylee got dressed in a light summer sundress with white kitten heels.
Now, the purse was an obvious fall staple that completely clashed with her breezy warm-weather look. But Kaylee said that she felt an overwhelming urge to grab it anyway before heading out the door. “It’s this brown crocodile Liz Claiborne little handbag. It’s a fall bag. It did not go with this outfit, but I just, for some reason, was like, ‘Let me just wear it today.'”
Kaylee then arrived at her local T.J. Maxx to process a counter full of returns. At the register, an enthusiastic young employee greeted her. Before the transaction even got underway, the cashier reportedly zeroed in on Kaylee’s purse, admiring the vintage style.
A compliment from a T.J. Maxx cashier inspired Kaylee to gift the handbag spontaneously
According to Kaylee, the cashier told her that she was preparing to attend her very first concert and had been scouring shops for that exact shade of brown shoulder bag to complete her event outfit. Right then, Kaylee connected the dots between her urge to keep the purse the night before and her decision to carry it that morning.
Kaylee reasoned that the odd coincidences were leading toward a single gesture. “I had this moment of, ‘Oh my God, I was meant to give her this bag,’” she exclaimed. So, without hesitation, she unzipped the purse, dumped her wallet and belongings into her arms, and handed the empty handbag across the counter as an outright gift.
She then watched the employee’s face light up with genuine excitement, confirming to her that trusting her gut instinct was the right call. This also left her convinced that everyday timing is rarely an accident. “It was just one of those moments where you feel synchronized with the universe. I know that sounds crazy, but the people that get it, get it,” she explained.
Kaylee also reminded the rest of us that holding onto our favorite pieces doesn’t always mean keeping them forever. If you ever feel an inexplicable pull to bring an out-of-season accessory along on an errand, don’t question it. Who knows, you might just be delivering someone else’s dream piece right on schedule.
