Marco Rubio struggles to keep up with Trump’s lies in a recent Senate hearing, prompting laughter from netizens

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and United States President Donald Trump are having a bonding moment over their collective amnesia. Clips circulating on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) from Rubio’s appearance during a Senate hearing about Venezuela show him exhibiting significant levels of forgetfulness regarding Trump’s actions, including some of the comments he made about the country in the past.
On January 28, 2026, Marco Rubio went to great lengths to defend Trump by consistently lying on his behalf. When asked to clarify statements that Trump himself had made previously, Rubio simply pretended that those incidents had not occurred to deflect and avoid further questioning. In a specific moment from the hearing that is currently going viral on social media, Rubio can be seen denying claims from Senator Chris Van Hollen, who, based on Trump’s own comments, asked Rubio to confirm if he was with Trump when he had discussions with oil executives ahead of the US’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, as Trump had stated in a previous press interaction. Rubio not only refused to provide a simple yes or no answer to the question as requested, but he also completely denied that Trump had made such comments and claimed that the oil executives learned about Trump’s plans regarding the Venezuelan president and the country at the same time as everyone else, to which Hollen confronted him, stating that there is video evidence of Trump saying the complete opposite while aboard Air Force One.
In case anyone’s wondering, there is indeed a video of Trump making such a claim. On January 4, 2026, when asked by an interviewer if he had spoken to oil executives before kidnapping Maduro, Trump did in fact say, “Before and after,” confirming that they had knowledge of his upcoming actions.
Another moment from the Senate hearing that has gone viral on social media also involves Marco Rubio lying on Trump’s behalf. In a particular segment of the discussion, after being challenged by Senator Tammy Duckworth about Trump possibly deploying troops to Venezuela, Rubio can be seen completely refuting the claim and instead posing a question to Duckworth about when Trump made such a statement. Trump has indeed made a statement like this. In a previous press conference shortly after the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, Trump declared that the US was “not afraid of having boots on the ground” if necessary. He also said:
We had boots on the ground last night at a very high level, actually. We’re not afraid of it. We don’t mind saying it, but we’re going to make sure that country is run properly.”
