Splitting the bill on a first date is one thing. Being told that your share depends on whether you’re going home with the person across the table is another. One woman decided to get that particular dinner arrangement on camera.
According to Yahoo, TikToker @melodak53 recorded herself confronting a date who said he’d only cover her meal if she accompanied him home afterward. The clip was originally posted on January 20, then shared by TikToker @yahwehalways9, who added commentary of her own.
Instead of simply walking away from the uncomfortable conversation, she turned on her camera and asked the man to repeat what he’d said.
The dinner bill comes with a condition
“Wait, what did you say again?” she asks as the video begins. The man asks whether she’s coming home with him or heading home alone. She checks that she’s understood correctly: If she doesn’t go home with him, she has to pay her half of the bill.
“Yes,” he answers, explaining that paying for her meal wouldn’t seem fair if he didn’t “get anything out of it.”
“That’s disgusting. Like, you actually treat women like this?” she asks.
“Not all the time,” he replies.
The conversation then turns to the check. The woman asks to see it and reads the amount aloud: $58.
“Oh, $58. You don’t got $58 in your bank? That’s fine. Imma get my card,” she says.
This dating horror story seems almost uncannily familiar to another first-date story involving a man who offered to cover dinner under a condition. The main difference is that @melodak53 had the man explain his fine print on camera.
‘Dating is a humiliation ritual’
The woman then tells her date she’s been recording their conversation because she wants people to see how some men behave toward women. He calls the recording “disrespectful” and asks whether she’s filming him. She says she’s recording for her safety. The clip ends as she prepares to leave the table.
In another viral dating incident, a woman described discovering that her date had left a phone recording her while he went to the bathroom. In this case, @melodak53 openly tells her companion that she’s recording.
TikToker @yahwehalways9, who shared the $58 dating fiasco footage with a reaction, focused on the man’s expectation that paying for dinner should entitle him to something afterward. “And she had no problem paying for it too. It’s no issue,” the reposter said. “But you think that food equates to her body? That’s crazy.”
She argued that people go on dates to get to know one another, not to negotiate an exchange of dinner for sex. Her commentary ended with a strong recommendation for women to take themselves on dates instead. “Dating is definitely a humiliation ritual,” she said.
For all the attention given to the $58 check, the woman never said she couldn’t pay it. She even offered to get her card. What she seemingly wanted her date to explain was why the bill came with conditions in the first place.
