Man from Georgia Was Asked by His Best Friend for His Dead Father’s Name. He Lied and It Backfired On Him
His prank came back to bite him.

Some friendships are built on goofy gestures, and for Michael Smoak (@higherupwellness), it wasn’t unusual for him to joke around with his best friend, Nick Komodina. But when Smoak decided to throw out a seemingly harmless lie about his dad’s name, the prank came back to bite him.
“When your friendship is built on [expletive] with each other, this is what happens when one of you tries to be sweet and intentional,” Smoak told TikTok. It’s not uncommon for friends, and even family members, to pull pranks on each other. One man even took his trick to the extreme by pranking his family about getting married without inviting them to the ceremony. In the same vein, Smoak and Komodina are used to messing with each other.
“The other day, he texted me, I don’t know why,” Smoak said. He explained that his best friend asked him about a quote Smoak’s father used to say a lot. Smoak replied honestly, “Have a good day, be a good person, be the kind of friend a friend would want to have.” The TikTok content creator explained that his father used to say the quote every day before dropping him off at school.
“He’s now passed away, and it’s a very meaningful quote to me,” Smoak said. Then, unexpectedly, Komodino asked for the name of Smoak’s late father.
“What was your dad’s name? For some reason, I feel like it was a Paul,” Komodino allegedly said. Instead of correcting his friend, Smoak decided to lie to him and claimed that “Paul” was definitely his late father’s name.
He lied to his best friend, and the prank backfired
“I was trolling him. My dad’s name is Mike,” he said. Smoak said he felt bored and just wanted to mess with his friend’s head. He didn’t think much of it, like these siblings who tried playing “dead” and almost ended up dying. It seemed like a harmless prank until a few days later.
“By the way, my dad’s name is not Paul,” Smoak later told Komodina. His best friend was surprised and then issued him a warning. “You will realize the magnitude of what you’ve done soon enough,” he said, and it seemed like an apocalyptic text until Smoak opened his mail. He saw the package, and Komodina printed the quote of Smoak’s father on canvas for display.
“This beautiful canvas of what my dad always used to say to me,” Smoak said, then gestured at the bottom. The quote was attributed to a “Paul Smoak,” all because he lied about his father’s name.
“He gave me a birthday gift with the wrong name of my dead father on it. Thanks, Nick,” Smoak laughed. The prank was harmless, but not without consequence. Komodina also played into the joke, greeting him with a “Happy birthday [expletive]” in the comment section. Nevertheless, the prank went viral on social media, with many social media users laughing along.
One commenter said that they hope a family member finds the gift and asks who “Paul” is. Others said that the added inside joke makes the gift even better. But beyond laughing at the prank, another person weighed in and said Smoak’s father would have loved the gift.
The commenter wrote, “I can so confidently say based on his quote alone, your dad would love this lol. What an amazing way to honor not only him, but what he instilled in you and how that manifested into you having such a great friendship!” To that, Smoak agreed. At the very least, his and Komodina’s prank is now just a friendly inside joke. Another pair of friends, on the other hand, went overboard by pranking an Amish community with Photoshop.
