Man from California waited for his birthday surprise present. He received 11 stab wounds instead: ‘Happy to be alive’
An extremely unpleasant surprise.

Matthew (@matthewproblem) thought his boyfriend would give him a thoughtful surprise birthday present. He ended up with eleven stab wounds instead. Despite the harrowing event, Matthew lived to tell his story on TikTok.
21 years ago in college, Matthew dated a man whose name he didn’t mention. Matthew commented, “And I suspected he was lying about a lot of stuff, but he always had an answer that made perfect sense.” Despite his partner’s supposed dishonesty, Matthew kept him around.
A few days before his 21st birthday, his boyfriend came into his bathroom and asked if he wanted his present. Matthew said he was told to lie down on his bed and put a pillow on his face because it was supposed to be a surprise. He did as he was told, and shortly after, Matthew said he heard his boyfriend’s stomach rumbling. After a minute of just lying there, Matthew decided to take a peek, and his partner was still in the bathroom.
A birthday present he will never forget
He later came back into the room and announced that he was ready to give Matthew his present. Matthew alleged, “And then he jumped on top of me, punched me—what I thought was being punched—three times in the chest.” After that, Matthew stood up and pushed his boyfriend, confronting him about what he had done.
“That’s when I saw he was holding a knife up, and there was blood running down his arm. But I figured in that instant, oh, it must be a joke, and it must be a retractable knife,” Matthew recalled. But then, his boyfriend allegedly started screaming, “I’m poor! I’m poor! I’m poor!” while swinging the knife in Matthew’s direction.
Matthew backed up toward the window. They were on the 12th floor, and he had nothing around him to use as a weapon. Out of options, Matthew decided to escape but got stabbed in the back as he was running past his boyfriend. Matthew said his boyfriend raised his arms, with one hand holding the knife. He grabbed both hands to disarm his boyfriend, took the knife, and fled.
Matthew took time to unlock the apartment door but made it to the elevator. When the elevator opened, the woman inside screamed upon seeing Matthew holding a knife while bloody. Matthew explained repeatedly that his boyfriend tried to end his life.
When he arrived at the lobby, Matthew told the front desk to call 911. Unlike this man from Atlanta, whose 911 call was transferred to an AI chatbot, a doctor living in the building treated Matthew immediately. Eventually, the ambulance came, and Matthew was rushed in for surgery. Matthew said he suffered from a collapsed left lung and also sustained injuries to the spleen and diaphragm.
His boyfriend, who allegedly attacked him, jumped from the apartment balcony. Matthew said his boyfriend didn’t survive. “So, that was the story of what happened in that day. Happy to be alive,” Matthew commented.
His partner’s suspicious behavior
Months before the attack, Matthew alleged that his boyfriend made two dangerously suggestive comments. After visiting a church, his partner allegedly suggested that it would be a good idea to swerve their vehicle off a cliff if he wanted to end his life. Matthew panicked, saying, “No, are you kidding me?”
He didn’t have a death wish. However, his boyfriend repeated the same thought as they drove on the highway. He allegedly said that if he wanted to end his life, he could drive into the oncoming lane and go right into a semi. Again, Matthew refused, telling his boyfriend it would be a horrible idea that could harm other people. Then, a week before the attack, Matthew said his apartment burned down for an unknown reason.
Regardless, Matthew survived all incidents without any permanent injuries. In another video, he claimed that he wasn’t traumatized and was proud to have survived.
