And TOPH is back! I'm frankly a bit surprised she's not tearing Kuvira a new one for wrecking the Swamp. Hey, Chief I expected Lin to say "mom," and I got "chief," instead. I expected Toph to say "Lin," and I got "chief," again. It was perfect. You're my hero! Can we just appriciate how one of the shows most powerful male characters has an older woman as his hero? Bolin you're perfect. Dipstick Was I the only one who did not hear "dipstick" when I first watched this? Gross Toph sums up our reactions to Juicy perfectly. Opal, please promise me you won't name your children. King Prince Wu: Savior of The People That is as long as there's a date in it for him, otherwise screw it. Poor Mako. I loved his reaction to Wu's reasoning for suggesting saving people. Zhu Li! I really expected Percy Batar Jr to say, "Do the thing!" Obviously this is why the whole thing nearly blew up. I smell something fishy The instant this cracked ring showed up my hopes for Zhu Li still being a good guy sky rocketed! Scanning... I love it when we get the chance to see the Beifong scanner in action! What an entrance! You gotta admit Kuvira knows how to make a dramatic entrance. The lighting here is quite impressive! She's Lying... I completely forgot Toph knew how to detect lies. I will say the instant she spoke that line all I could think of was Saga's Lying Cat . Then there's Bolin's "I KNEW IT" face! The spirits are leaving Though short, this sequence of Korra wandering through the Wilds reminded me a lot of Spirited Away . Especially because of the backgrounds and shot framing. Instant Noodles How you know we're in more 'modern' times. Baby Daddy Bomb Bolin either had the balls, or the lack of brains to ask about who Lin's dad was. Lin's face in this bit was hilarious! It reminded me a lot of one of my favorite fan artists Makani Draws ! Her take on Mako and Lin never fails to make me laugh. Family Drama This entire scene I felt really bad for both Lin and Toph. I will say it's a bit screwed up Toph just flat out told Bolin when she'd kept it from Lin for so long. He'll Catch You When You Fall ...or you know get tossed through the air over a giant pit. Really glad Lin had good aim, otherwise things could get awkward quick. Zhu Li's Varriked herself! Yay! Our suspicions of Zhu Li being a good guy all along are confirmed! Whew! Okay Kuvira you can just lock her awa- ...WHAT? You can't use her for shooting practice! Damn, that got dark quick. I'll save you! I just love it when the Beifong sisters look out for one another. Warms my heart, you know? Beifong Hugs This was a really cute family reunion. Though that hair on Batar Sr had me laughing. Opal Can't be Cooler! Sibling rivalry is alive and well in the next generation of Beifongs. Oh, Mother... Toph: Shut up, Batar. Smug Spirit TL;DR - Hey. we live in your world and all but we don't wanna help because your crazy uncle kinda burned us on ever helping humans out soooooo kthanksbai. That character design was really cool though! SAVE GINNY OPAL It's sweet that Batar Jr still cares for his sister enough not to shoot her at least. Though I do wonder if that's gonna cause a riff between the "young couples bliss" that he shares with Kuvira. Seriously, you guys I see no attraction between these two at all. That is one big hole. I felt like this hole in the mountain warranted an avalanche at LEAST. Kuvria vs SuYin IT WAS EVERYTHING I DIDN'T KNOW I WANTED. You give metal benders a bad name! Ouch! I can't give any better commentary on this scene because someone else already did it . Zhu Li's coming back for you Kuvira Can we all just appriciate the fact that Zhu Li was not only willing to cause the cannon to explode and give her life up for it, but that she still looks determined to wreck Kuvira even now? That is the face of determination. Kuvira better watch out or she's gonna get Zhu Li'd! Making up I appreciate how Toph gives her kids the ability to choose how they want to proceed and just rolls with it. She was willing to be loved, and she was willing to let go if that's what they wanted. That takes guts. BOPAL IS BACK! Hey, look at that. It's affection! Batar Jr and Kuvira, see this is what people do when they you know, like eachother? You should do more of that if you want to convince me you're really going to marry each other. DUN DUN DUN!!!! Zhu Li drops the bomb that in two weeks Kuvira's going after Republic City. The finale is in two weeks. Coincidence? I think not. I can't wait to see Zhu Li and Varrick's reunion! Spirit bombs blasting holes through mountains, metal bending battles and the Beifongs are all at the center of it! This episode is definitely an amazing one for earth bending enthusiasts. However, this episode doesn’t come without lightly touching on some deeper issues. One of those issues, Mother-Daughter drama in specific, has been striking a chord for fans.
Toph isn’t a great mom. While she cares about her friends and family, Toph’s tough love nature doesn’t leave much room for nurture. You don’t see many shows, much less animated ones, take on this heavy a topic. That moment you realize your parent isn’t the all-knowing omnipresent entity you imagined them to be, but instead a fallible person can be upsetting for kids at any age. Adults screw up, but most of them do care enough to want things to work out. It’s a subject that a lot of shows try to tackle and and fail. Korra’s writing team did a good job with this one. Is it simplistic? Yep. Is it way too easily resolved? Probably. However, it takes a tough concept and makes it not only understandable, but relatable. That takes talent, and it’s clear the Korra team has really hit a stride.
AND UHM, How about that baby daddy reveal?
So much OH SNAP even Rita Skeeter can’t deal
