Katy Perry singing in space is…unsurprising

So Katy Perry went to space today. As part of a long list of millionaires who are spending their money on six seconds floating above earth instead of doing something good with it, Perry flew up and came right back down. But she had enough time to sing.

According to Gayle King, who went on the space adventure with the “Firework” singer, Perry was asked to sing some of her classic pop hits and wouldn’t do it. But as they were heading back to earth after hitting no gravity, Perry reportedly sang “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

King was interviewed after their space outing and shared her excitement over Perry singing. She even shared that many of them wanted to hear her sing “Roar” or any number of her songs while they were on the trip but that Perry said it wasn’t about her and was instead about the world itself.

I don’t know, if I was on that trip and Perry didn’t sing “E.T.” for even a second, I would be mad. But anyway, the trip was sponsored by Jeff Bezos (who owns Blue Origin’s NS-31) and Perry went up with King as well as journalist Lauren Sánchez.

Perry’s reason to the “world” while being in space is interesting since going to space can actually hurt the ozone layer. So her sudden love and dedication to the environment and world after landing back on earth (she kissed the ground when they returned) is a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, I understand the desire to go to space. I love the idea of it but if I had that much money, I don’t think that’s the first thing I would do. There are options to fly as a “guest” on the ship (like William Shatner did) and we know that a seat on the maiden voyage auctioned off for $28 million. I don’t think anyone in this crew spent that much and maybe they were all guests but I still think that stunts like these are doing more harm than good.

Even if Katy Perry sang about the world.
