‘I volunteer as tribute’: Haymitch’s story is coming together with a pretty iconic cast

Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy in 'The Hunger Games'

Sunrise on the Reaping brought us the story we always wanted: Haymitch Abernathy’s games. And now, as is tradition, we’re getting a movie version of the latest Suzanne Collins novel. And the cast is shaping up to be pretty amazing.

News was announced that Joseph Zada will be our Haymitch Abernathy, the Tribute from District 12 in the Second Quarter Quell. His casting was announced along side Whitney Peak’s casting as Lenore Dove Baird. More casting has since come out with McKenna Grace set to play Maysilee Donne in the film as well. When co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Erin Westerman spoke about the upcoming film, she praised the casting.

“The Hunger Games franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire,” said Westerman. “After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out—not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles.”

Westerman went on, talking about how beloved the character has been to fans. “Haymitch has always been a fan favorite, and his origin story is one of the most anticipated in the franchise. His relationship with Lenore Dove is deeply woven into the emotional history of Panem.  We can’t wait for fans to experience the story that shaped one of the most compelling characters in the series.”

This has been a story that many of us wanted to see. The Second Quarter Quell puts double the amount of tributes into the arena and it cemented Haymitch as one of the best Victors around. He was, for years, one of the only winners for District 12 and his upset over what happened to him weighed on him as he was trying to help Katniss and Peeta later on. So getting to see the carnage that destroyed Haymitch come to life is going to be hard to watch.

But we are excited to see what Zada, Peak, and Grace bring to the franchise.
