Man Goes To Hermès. Then He Shares A ‘Pro Tip’ To Get Them To Sell You The Bag. There’s Just One Catch

If you know anything at all about shopping at Hermès, it’s probably that the brand gatekeeps some of its most coveted items with a passion.
To purchase something like an iconic Birkin bag, which can cost around $15,000 depending on size and leather, shoppers often say you usually have to build a long purchase history, or “pre-spend,” with the brand.
The amount you need to spend to get there varies. But many Hermès shoppers online believe it can be at least the amount that the bag itself costs. In other words, to buy a Birkin bag, you could end up spending double the price of the bag, if not more.
This system has generated a lot of buzz around Hermès products. Online, people often share tips and tricks that can supposedly help you get closer to purchasing a Hermès bag.
One TikTok creator who seems to collect Birkin bags, Mayank Bhatter (@mayankbhatter), shared a new trick that many probably haven’t heard about.
Can This ‘Trick’ Bring You Closer To Your Birkin Bag Purchase?
In his clip, which has gotten over 979,200 views, Bhatter films the hardware on a black Birkin bag.
“Pro Tip: ‘Accidentally’ remove the plastic off the hardware when they show you any bag so it’s no longer new and they have to give it to you,” the video’s text overlay reads.
Bhatter then smiles at the camera while holding a small piece of what appears to be the plastic cover from the hardware.
“Try it,” he added in the caption.
In the comments, viewers either ridiculed the Hermès buying process or questioned the method.
“You mean ‘so YOU are forced to BUY it?’” one commenter wrote.
“This is just bad advice and it will hopefully be sent back to wear it came from so they can put the plastic back on since it’s brand new,” another said.
Someone else admitted they would never do this.
“Am I that cheap, I never remove that,” they wrote.
Bhatter also jumped into the comments himself to clear things up. “It’s a joke!” he wrote.
Does This Work As A Legitimate ‘Hack’?
Probably not.
If someone wants to purchase a Birkin or Kelly bag through Hermès, they typically have to build a relationship with a sales associate. Outside of simple pre-spend, customers online often say there are unspoken rules to follow. Some common ones: don’t act too desperate, show genuine interest in the brand, buy across different categories. Another one is not to make the entire relationship about getting a bag.
Hermès fans often call this “the game.”
There are also things shoppers say can hurt your chances. Reselling a quota bag after getting one from Hermès is often treated as a major red flag in these communities. Other behavior, like pressuring associates or trying to work with several associates at the same store could also hurt your relationship.
All this to say, if the line is already that fine, then presumably doing something like removing the plastic cover from the hardware would be an immediate no-no.
At best, the associate may just be annoyed. At worst, the store could treat it as tampering with merchandise and ask you to pay for damages. They could also forcibly remove you from the store.
