Things We Saw Today: The Red Band Trailer Promises a Bloodsoaked, Cursing Hellboy

Like most nerds, I’m a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films, 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army. GDT brought fantastical creature design, wit, and flawless casting with Ron Perlman as the pamcake-loving demon. And while it’s a bummer that we’ll never get a third chapter in the del Toro story, there’s plenty to be excited for in the Hellboy reboot.

The film, directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy. The trailer gives us a glimpse at Hellboy’s origin story, with Ian McShane (American Gods) as father figure Trevor Bruttenholm. We also meet BPRD team members Ben Daimio (Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim), who can turn into a jaguar and Alice Monaghan (The Miseducation of Cameron Post‘s Sasha Lane) who has mystical powers.

We also get a closer look at the plot, which involves Milla Jovovich as Nimue, Queen of Blood. Nimue, a powerful 5th century witch, looks to take over the world and take Hellboy as a husband. Once again, Hellboy must reconcile saving a world that treats him like an outcast. The film is loosely based on Darkness Calls, The Storm and the Fury, and The Wild Hunt. We also get a look at some terrific creature design and VFX (I’m especially excited about Baba Yaga’s walking house).

Hellboy comes out on April 12th. Are you excited?
