Weddings are inarguably one of the most stressful events in a person’s life. Between hoping guests RSVP, securing the venue, booking vendors, and searching for the perfect cake, the whole process can be overwhelming.

As the big day approaches, any last-minute inconveniences can transform into monumental ones. But cancellations are the worst, whether it’s from the guests, the photographer, or, like it was for this bride, the H-E-B baker in charge of her cake.

According to her, they bailed on her a week before the wedding.

An H-E-B Cake Disaster

“It’s less than a week until my wedding, and I’ve just been informed by my baker that they cannot make my wedding cake,” Texas bride Tiana Reeves (@corporate_mom) says, sitting in her bedroom. “I physically went to the H-E-B bakery that I was going through, spoke with someone at the counter, spoke with the wedding cake baker, spoke with her face-to-face and showed her the cake I wanted to do.”

Then, the background cuts to an AI-generated photo of her dream cake she’s referring to: a two-tier white cake adorned with pink ribbons and roses. Although the baker would be unable to include the decorations, she would still have the colors and the flavors she requested: a layer of red velvet cream cheese and vanilla French buttercream.

Now, it seems the content creator isn’t able to have the cake altogether. “I’m being told now I can’t have those flavors on the cake, I can’t have those flavors on the frosting. I’m not gonna get the cake that I ordered,” Reeves says.

With the clock ticking, she’s turning to over 46,000 viewers for advice. “It’s less than a week. What are my real options?”

Viewers Weigh In

In the comments section, many shared their suggestions for tackling the situation and alternatives to H-E-B.

“Do you have the [original] order paperwork? Take it and ask for a manager. If they can’t help, email corporate (actually I’d do both),” one viewer proposed.

“This is not right. They accepted the order so they should have made sure the baker was on that day. Call corp!” another echoed.

“HEB is usually top notch on what they can do. Ask for the store manager. What Happened? Did they make it right? If the store manager can’t make it happen, go higher. [They] are all about customer service,” a third agreed.

“If you live near Publix… their bakery is top tier,” a fourth commented.

“Sam’s Club can do this and their cakes are so delicious,” a fifth stated.

“Go to a real baker that does wedding cakes,” a sixth remarked.

Did H-E-B Ever Rectify The Problem?

A week after the wedding, Reeves posted the update about the cake debacle. She recapped the incident, which occurred prior to her big day.

“H-E-B corporate saw the video with the cake that I wanted and reached out,” she said. “I spoke again with the bakery and we worked out how I can get the flavors of the frosting that I wanted but keep the integrity of the cake.”

This should’ve been good news. After all, the company reached out to remedy the issue in the nick of time. Instead, it plummeted from bad to worse.

“This is what it looked like,” she stated, unveiling a picture of an underwhelming, tiny, two-tier white and orange cake topped with humongous roses in a cardboard box. Essentially, the cake bore no resemblance to the photo inspo.

“This is not the same cake,” the content creator remarked.

However, Reeves’ wedding coordinator swooped in and saved the day, adjusting the cake to appear nearly identical to the original concept with different colored roses and ribbons. While the confection worked out, she felt H-E-B also failed to meet her expectations in other aspects.

“My other disappointment was that my mom’s corsage that I also ordered through H-E-B broke as soon as she put it on,” she said. “I spent close to almost $1,000 on florals, the cake, and other desserts that I ordered before the ceremony. So, it was really disappointing.”

“All in all, it was a great experience as far as the wedding was concerned. No one else really knew but as a bride, as a consumer, it was pretty disappointing,” the content creator concluded.

The Mary Sue reached out to Reeves via email and TikTok comment as well as H-E-B via press email.

Update:

In an interview with The Mary Sue, Reeves revealed she received the cake from the Mansfield location. Then, she elaborated more about the situation, beginning with why she selected H-E-B to bake her wedding cake.

“I chose them because I heard from other shoppers that they make a good economical wedding cake and that the cake may come blank or with limited decorations,” she shared via email. “I picked up wedding cake samples before placing my order and I was satisfied with the quality and taste. I was extremely disappointed to get a phone call the week of my wedding that I would need to select another cake option.”

After her original video went viral, H-E-B contacted her to remake the cake with slight variations.

“H-E-B corporate saw my video a few days before my wedding and called and said they would make my cake to my specifications but with a small tweak to the icing because they were concerned that layering a sour cream-iced cake would not hold up,” the content creator said. “I was also told that the floral department could add flowers to the cake to match the picture for a fee. So I agreed to do buttercream icing and get flowers from their department.”

However, Reeves was met with disappointment when it was time to pick up the cake. Even the bakery department understood and tweaked it more to her liking, which didn’t end very well.

“The day before the wedding I picked up the cake and it was decorated differently than the inspiration picture I provided. The bakery team looked again at the photo and the cake and apologized for the error and offered to make some adjustments,” she said. “I came back a few hours later. They adjusted the flowers but the cake was still very orange.”

Fortunately, her wedding coordinator was able to fix the cake more to her vision.

“It was two hours until my rehearsal dinner so I took the cake and my wedding coordinator was able to make adjustments to have it match my vision,” she said.

Although she still remains a loyal customer, the content creator warns other brides if they intend to choose this route for their wedding cake.

“A few weeks later HEB gave me a gift card equivalent to the value of the cake. I have been an H-E-B customer for many years and their customer service and quality products far exceed this hiccup. I would shop there again and I would tell other brides to select another bakery if they have a specific vision in mind as results may vary,” she stated.
