In the novel and now Wright’s film, Ben is a father to a young girl named Cathy. She gets sick and Ben decides to volunteer for a game called “The Running Man” that will earn his family enough money to hopefully save Cathy. So a lot of what makes Ben a sympathetic character is his love for his family. Which is easy for Powell to relate to.

In a new cover story for Entertainment Weekly, Powell spoke about how his love for his family helped him and how being an uncle allowed him to connect with Ben’s need to save his daughter. “I would say a big part of my identity, a big part of who I am, is that gear of feeling like an uncle, feeling and caring for my family to a monumental degree, in which it wasn’t a far stretch for my imagination of how far I would go for that little girl,” he said.

He did also joke that he is a father already to everyone’s favorite dog: Brisket. The dog has become beloved by fans and is often a more sought after figure. The people love Brisket Powell. “I guess I am a father, I’m a father of Brisket. It’s not exactly the same thing, but Brisket’s my child of sorts; he’s spoiled better than any kid that I’ve ever met. And I would sign up for a murderous game show for Brisket for sure.”

So yes, sure, Glen Powell himself may not be a “father” yet but Brisket sure knows who his dad is and if it helps us all love and care for Ben Richards more, so be it.
