Following repeated verbal attacks, Colombian President Gustavo Petro wants Trump to ‘talk’ to him ‘intelligently’

In the last few months, President Donald Trump has managed to successfully plunge the United States into a state of complete chaos, particularly due to his efforts to eliminate the drug trade in the country. The end of last week and this week have been mainly about Trump’s abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on narcoterrorism charges. While many have argued that Trump’s forces entering a sovereign nation and abducting their president, irrespective of his character, was a poor decision and somewhat illegal, Trump has not allowed these comments to affect him.
It seems that Donald Trump is envisioning the annexation of another country and the capture of yet another world leader. This country is Colombia, and the individual is President Gustavo Petro. Speaking to a reporter while aboard Air Force One on January 5, 2026, Trump stated that the idea of the United States conducting an operation in Colombia to capture Gustavo Petro, who is a left-leaning individual and a fierce critic of Trump, “sounds good to him.” Before sharing his plans regarding Petro, Trump said:
“Colombia is very sick, too. Run by a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States. And he’s not going to be doing it very long, let me tell you.”
Gustavo Petro did not hold back in response to Trump’s blatant threats of action against him in Colombia. In a public address on January 5, 2026, Petro asserted that he was not intimidated by Trump’s claims about him. He also stated that he was “waiting” for Trump and that if he wanted to find a solution, he was always open to discussions and debates but would not engage in “invasions,” “missiles,” or “murders.” He expressed:
“Don’t threaten me with invasion. I’m waiting for you here if you want. I do not accept invasions. I do not accept missiles. I do not accept murders. I accept intelligence. Come, talk to me intelligently, and we’ll receive you.”
Petro’s direct challenge to Trump has sparked significant interest among the public, especially on social media. On platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), many users are enjoying Petro’s sharp criticisms of Trump with cleverly crafted insults. However, there are some who believe that Petro should avoid making such statements about Trump publicly, as it could potentially lead to his capture by the United States or, worse, his assassination. The man is honestly capable of doing a lot of things at the moment.
