A Florida woman said she wanted to go to the “Tiger Woods” mini-golf course on a date. Then, she went to a neighboring pool bar where a man refused to serve her drinks because she had had a few beforehand.

TikToker @chronicallyonline94 had a couple of drinks at PopStroke, an all-inclusive, primarily adult-centered mini-golf course. When she and a group of new friends she had made went into a neighboring pool bar to continue their conversation, they were told she wasn’t allowed to drink anything else and that the group needed to leave.

The TikToker felt the situation was weird, especially considering the fact that she had a valid, legal ID with her. It frustrated her enough to post, with her video garnering 24,000 views within three days. Surprisingly, though, many commenters agreed with the bartender’s decision to cut her off.

What is PopStroke?

PopStroke is a large-scale, mini-golf “experience” with multiple locations across the U.S. South. The bar, restaurant, and mini-golf-course hybrid originally began in 2019 at the behest of founder Greg Bartoli, with the first location opening in St. Lucie, Florida. Later, locations opened in Dallas, Austin, Nashville, and Las Vegas.

In 2020, Woods joined PopStroke as an investor, which is why the TikToker referred to the golfing course as “Tiger Woods” bar. Woods does not actually individually “own” PopStroke, but he is listed as a partner and investor.

What happened during and after the PopStroke date?

The creator went on a date with a guy to PopStroke, which she was excited for. After some rounds and a couple of drinks, they ended up meeting a few individuals who they chatted with all evening.

The creator and her date talked for a long time after playing and ended up closing out PopStroke. So, the group realized they quickly needed to find something else to do. She suggested pool, so they made their way to a pool bar nearby.

As soon as they got to a pool bar in the neighborhood, though, they ran into trouble. The bartender immediately asked for IDs, which the group provided. When the bartender asked whether the TikToker had been drinking, she answered, “Yes.” That’s when he refused to serve her a drink. He told the entire group that they needed to leave, but he only mentioned that she couldn’t have any more alcohol.

Confused, she tried to discuss the situation with the man, but he wouldn’t budge. The group decided to go to another spot down the street. But the creator wanted to test something. She asked one of the men in the group from California to go back with her to the pool bar instead of her date. There, she asked again why they were refusing service. They once again did and gave no explanation, simply saying they couldn’t serve her “tonight.”

Why did the bartender stop the woman from drinking?

It’s unclear exactly why the bartender refused to serve her, but commenters had a few guesses.

Most guessed that the TikToker was visibly inebriated to the point that they needed to refuse service. “Take it as a sign to take a [little] drinking break. Speaking from experience,” one commenter said.

“[It definitely] sounds like he was trying to protect you,” another commenter said. “3/1 odds and you already had a couple drinks..It wasn’t about him thinking you seemed drunk, he was doing what he could to avoid possibly putting you in a compromising situation. *side note you’re absolutely beautiful!*”

Regardless, bartenders have a right to refuse service to patrons for any number of reasons, as long as the bartender isn’t specifically discriminating against an individual. Generally, It’s in a bar’s best interest to refuse service to avoid potential legal complications with overpouring. If the bartender had no idea how many drinks she had but knew that she had drinks before that point, it could constitute a cutoff.
