Donald Trump Quoted Bane in His Inaugural Address in Case You Needed More Warning Signs

Victory has defeated ... everything.

Donald Trump’s rise as a demagogue has not been subtle in any way, and his inaugural address this afternoon was no different. During a generally unsettling speech, one line in particular stuck out, in which Trump promised to take government back from Washington D.C. and give it back to the people … just like Bane promised with Gotham in The Dark Knight Rises, and we all know how that turned out.

Of course, this is totally in line with the style of his chief adviser Stephen Bannon, who literally, in the same breath as he said, “It only helps us when they get it wrong—when they’re blind to who we are and what we’re doing,” also told The Hollywood Reporter: “Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power.” While it’d be tough to say this Bane similarity is another intentionally outlandish cultural reference, it’s definitely worth noting that he clearly threw those names at THR as a perfect example of a distraction from the things he was actually saying, and Bannon surely had some input into the inaugural address.

Remember: as cathartic as it is to mock Donald Trump, we have to make sure we’re also paying attention to what he’s really doing. He’s already at work dismantling important progress that we’ve made and were in the process of making as a civilization. His very first act as president was to sign a waiver to push through his Defense Secretary pick by overriding a law that would’ve disqualified him.

That’s the world we live in now. So, while we’re laughing at the Bane speech and the photo from Obama’s inauguration that was briefly featured on Trump’s new presidential Twitter account, let’s not forget to keep a watchful eye out.
