It’s safe to say there is a lot of anticipation around Lanterns. It is not only the first DC Universe project to be broadcast on HBO, but the first Green Lantern solo project in over a decade, after a number of failed stops and starts under various creative teams. Now, we’re finally getting to see the Emerald Knights onscreen, with Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline) bringing Hal Jordan to life, and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge, Mufasa: The Lion King) stepping into the role of John Stewart.

The first Lanterns teaser footage that was released in December of last year, as part of HBO’s 2026 sizzle reel, was already more than promising. In just a few seconds, it showcased the “Hard Travelin’ Heroes” vibes of the show, a better look at the Green Lantern ring, Hal’s gutsy no-holds-barred attitude, and John’s attempts at becoming a hero amid his mentor’s attitude.

“We wanted it to be as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show,” Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy explained in an interview with Men’s Health late last year. “Kyle’s character has kind of a throwback Chuck Yeager vibe to him. He’s the kind of guy who you meet, and you don’t know whether you like him or you want to punch him. Then there’s Aaron, who has a quiet authority about him, and I think that’s important to their dynamic, to the story we’re telling. And literally from day one, Kyle started giving Aaron shit for being young and inexperienced. And then Aaron started giving Kyle shit for being an old man. You’d see it in between takes too—they’d start messing with each other would just keep sitting there playing with that dynamic in the best way. And because all the dialog is supposed to be in a very back-and-forth, style they were into that rhythm before they even got into those scenes.”

What Is Lanterns About?

According to Warner Bros. Discovery’s official description for the series, Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The ensemble cast of Lanterns also includes Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette Stewart, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Sherman Augustus as John Stewart Sr., Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. Nathan Fillion will also reprise his scene-stealing role of Guy Gardner from 2025’s Superman.

The pilot for Lanterns is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes.

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion,” Mundy said in a statement when the series first began production. “The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

Lanterns is set to debut this coming August.
