Dallas woman sees an unfamiliar man outside her apartment. Then he starts testing the keypad and door handle: ‘really shaking me up’
Many people think the biggest safety risks happen at night. But one Dallas woman says a normal workday quickly turned frightening after an unfamiliar man showed up outside her apartment door.
The story has caught viewers’ attention because it started with everyday things many apartment residents would recognize. Olivia Mack (@oamack) says that it began with a knock at the door, a package notification, and someone entering a keypad code. She says she almost unlocked the door before trusting her instincts.
Olivia says she shared the experience to remind others to trust their gut, even when a situation seems normal at first. Her video has since prompted viewers to talk about apartment safety and what they would do in a similar situation.
What she saw changed everything
In her TikTok video, Olivia says she was working from home when she heard someone knock on her apartment door. She had recently received a notification that a package was on the way, so she initially thought someone might be delivering it, although she says deliveries usually arrive some time after the notification.
Moments later, she says she heard someone entering numbers on her apartment keypad. She first assumed it was maintenance, but says something felt off because she had not received any notice they would be coming that day.
She says the person outside also began moving the door handle, but the deadbolt prevented the door from opening. As she walked toward the entrance, she says she was about to unlock it before deciding to check through the peephole instead.
Looking through the peephole, she says she saw an unfamiliar man wearing glasses, a flannel shirt, and no maintenance uniform. She knocked from inside the apartment to see whether he would identify himself, but she says he remained silent.
Instead, she says the man placed his hands near the peephole and dragged them down the door, leaving visible scratch marks. She says seeing the marks immediately made her panic because she realized she had almost opened the door to someone she did not recognize.
She says she called her mother, boyfriend, and neighbor while panicking. Her neighbor then gave her the apartment maintenance team’s phone number.
Olivia says a maintenance worker answered immediately and assured her help was on the way. She says two employees arrived within minutes, and after confirming their identities, she opened the door and explained what had happened.
She says the maintenance workers searched the property while she remained inside. Her boyfriend also left work after receiving permission from his employer and picked her up so she would not have to stay alone in the apartment.
Later, she says maintenance told her they had found the man after he allegedly tried to enter multiple apartments. She says he appeared distressed and was making statements about children being kidnapped and killed before police arrived. She says she does not know what happened afterward.
The creator says the experience reminded her to always verify who is at the door before opening it. She encouraged viewers to contact maintenance, security, or trusted neighbors if they are ever unsure.
Apartment safety concerns have surfaced in other viral stories as well. One woman said she believed someone was repeatedly entering her apartment without permission, while another said someone broke into her first-floor apartment while she was out of town, leaving her to rethink the risks of living on the ground floor.
The video drew hundreds of reactions from viewers. Many shared similar experiences, while others offered safety tips such as using door security bars, alarm stickers, and staying connected with neighbors.
Others focused on the marks left on the door. “My jaw dropped at the claw marks. That is horrifying,” one viewer wrote. Another added, “It’s very hard to think clearly when something like this is happening. You just go into panic mode.”
