“It was only supposed to be $20”: Dad says his 9-year-old spent $118K on YouTube ads

A $20 attempt to get more views on a Minecraft channel somehow turned into a six-figure bill and a very real family crisis.

A father who spent $20 helping his nine-year-old son promote a Minecraft video now says he has 30 days to repay more than $118,000. The family is even considering selling their home to cover the bill, turning what started as a kid’s attempt to get more YouTube views into a serious financial problem.

Dave, the father behind the Mighty Mike Plays YouTube channel, previously explained that his son had used his company credit card to run YouTube advertising campaigns for his Minecraft and Roblox videos. Dave did not know whether he would lose his job or have to repay the money. In a new update, he says the company fired him and holds him responsible for the full amount.

Dave says the company has given him 30 days to repay a little over $118,000, while he and his wife are trying to figure out how they can possibly come up with the money. One possibility they’re considering is selling their home, which Dave says is where the family lives and where they have built years of memories.

A $20 YouTube campaign spiraled into a $118K bill

The spending began after Mike became frustrated that his videos weren’t getting the views or subscribers he wanted. Dave decided to show him how YouTube advertising worked, putting about $20 toward a small campaign and explaining that paying to promote a video could help get it in front of more viewers.

According to Dave, Mike later began creating his own campaigns after watching how his father had set one up. The nine-year-old apparently believed that putting more money behind the videos would mean getting more views, without understanding what the spending actually meant for his father’s company.

The campaigns promoted videos from the Mighty Mike Plays channel, including Minecraft gameplay, Roblox content, and videos featuring Mike. Dave says three of the promoted videos eventually reached around 200,000 views, while the advertising charges continued accumulating over the course of roughly three weeks.

Dave says he eventually learned what was happening when his company’s corporate and finance teams called him into a meeting. They showed him the advertising transactions and asked him to explain more than $118,000 in charges on the company card.

Dave has repeatedly said he does not blame his son for the spending because Mike was nine and did not understand the significance of using a company card. He instead takes responsibility for the safeguards that were missing, including spending limits and parental controls that could have prevented his son from continuing to run campaigns.

So how does YouTube advertising rack up $118K?

A nine-year-old spending $118,000 sounds like he somehow made one enormous purchase, but YouTube advertising doesn’t work quite that way. Advertisers set up campaigns to promote videos, and those campaigns can spend money as they deliver ads across YouTube and other Google video placements.

That makes the timeline in Dave’s explanation important. He says the charges accumulated over roughly three weeks rather than appearing as one massive transaction, with multiple campaigns promoting Mighty Mike Plays videos during that period.

Google Ads also provides advertisers with performance data showing how campaigns are spending and how viewers are responding to the ads. Dave says his employer eventually noticed the activity and brought him into a meeting with corporate and finance teams, where they showed him the accumulated charges.

Dave has said the situation ultimately came down to how he configured his account and payment information. He did not expect his son to use the advertising tools on his own, and he says he should have separated his work and personal accounts and added spending controls.
