Woman gets ahi tuna from Costco. She really should have read the package first: ‘This is my worst nightmare’

A woman purchases a large slab of raw ahi tuna from Costco and attempts to make poke, a raw dish. She gets the “ick” in the middle of the process and quickly regrets her decision.
In the video with over 136,000 views, TikToker Erika (@erikabeckerr) says she has never cut up a raw fish before and tells viewers she has “no idea what [she’s] doing.” She places the large, red slab of fish on a cutting board.
Erika begins to hack away at the fish, cutting off parts that look “weird” to her, including some slight discoloration on the outside of the meat.
“I’m really freaked the [expletive] out,” she exclaims. “This part over here is bloody. I don’t like that.”
Then, she pulls out a long white string from the meat.
What did she pull out of the fish?
“Is that a worm?” she asks, inspecting the substance. “It’s either a worm or one of the fibrous things that keeps it together. With a worm it would obviously move, right?”
The slices off nearly half of the fish to discard due to off-putting colors and textures, and cubes the rest of the meat she deems acceptable. She mixes the cubes into a thick white sauce and places a bite on a seaweed and rice chip.
“If I die, you know why,” she says right before taking the first bite. “I think I’m paranoid but I feel like it doesn’t taste what it should taste like. I’m going to gaslight myself into thinking I’m sick.”
Should you eat Costco tuna raw?
Some viewers point out that the tuna isn’t technically sushi grade, which is a marketing term used to describe raw fish that has been frozen to low temperatures to kill parasites. This process may make the raw fish safer to eat.
Costco doesn’t label its ahi tuna as sushi-grade. So, is it OK to eat it raw?
According to YouTuber and sushi expert, The Sushi Guy, Costco flash-freezes its tuna according to FDA standards for raw dishes. Even though the warehouse doesn’t use the unregulated marketing term “sushi grade,” it should be safe for customers to eat raw.
What do viewers think of her DIY poke?
Erika may not be the only one to get the “ick” from her cooking process. In the comments of the video TikTok, viewers say they were also grossed out by the raw fish.
“Im SO scared of raw meat and I am SQUIRMING watching you touch it,” one writes.
Another remarks, “How you didn’t immediately get the ick is impressive lol I would thrown it away.”
“You hope is doesn’t give you the ick? Lol. I had the ick before it made it out of the package,” a third says.
However, others assure Erika that the fish is likely safe to eat.
A viewer comments, “We just had this for dinner and made poke! It’s so good! You’ll be fine queen.”
The day after she posted the viral video, she lets viewers know in a comment that she is “alive and well.”
