Paramount Pictures is currently working on a sequel to Coming to America. I know I say this a lot (and really, think about what that means), but go ahead and let that news sink in. Hmm. Yes. Okay. Let’s dig in.
This news comes courtesy the Hollywood insider website The Tracking Board, the editor-in-chief of which has a solid track record of breaking news like this—at least, according to /Film. The report also says that Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, the film’s original writers, are on board to write once again. Producer Kevin Misher (Public Enemies, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, The Scorpion King) is also attached to, well, produce.
The original Coming to America centered on one Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy), an incredibly pampered prince hailing from the fictional African kingdom of Zamunda. He comes to America (get it) in search of a wife, traveling to Queens (of all places) alongside his best friend, Semmi (Arsenio Hall). It’s a classic, classic 80s comedy, one that stands as an example of great comedy, and one of the highlights of Murphy’s career.
Unfortunately—and predictably—the details of the sequel’s plot are still tightly under wraps. It’s also a bit hard to guess at what it could possibly be about. After all, at the end of Coming to America, Prince Akeem finds his queen. It’s entirely possible that this could focus on a whole new prince and everything, but man, that just seems a bit tacked on, don’t you think?
Well, obviously this is all speculation, as a formal announcement hasn’t exactly been shared quite yet. But still … I have no idea if I want to see this movie.
