We have talked about the disappointment over the cancellation of Netflix’s Daredevil and how that has affected the people working behind the scenes, but now that Charlie Cox has spoken to Entertainment Weekly about his feelings on the issue and the shock he felt about the news.
For the past four years, Charlie Cox has been the face of the series as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Just like Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen, Cox was tasked with bringing realism to a comic book character who blended tragedy and grit with the trappings of comics. Sadly, that came to an end when it was announced that the first Marvel Netflix show was ending.
“A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did,” Cox told EW. “The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that.”
Cox continued to say that he understands that this is just the nature of a business where no show is ever truly guaranteed unless the renewal comes in, but there’s still a bittersweetness considering his own emotional attachment to the character, as well as that of fans. “These characters mean a lot to people. It’s weird to think there’s a chance I won’t be playing Matt Murdock ever again. That’s a bizarre feeling, because that character has been such a huge part of my life for the last four and a half years.”
Cox would say whether he knows any insider information about the future of the characters we have come to care for on the show. According to Deadline, there was a statement released from the powers that be saying, “We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”
They have also put out a statement saying that, while the show is canceled, it will continue to be available on Netflix. “While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
That, of course, doesn’t mean that, if the character continues, it will be Cox playing him, or that any of the existing actors, writers, etc. would come back. I have to say that the thought of anyone else but Vincent D’Onofrio playing Fisk in the future doesn’t even compute. The idea of him appearing opposite baby Tom Holland is something I want to see, Thanos-damn it.
“It’s so new, the news,” Cox said. “It’s quite painful for quite a lot of people. I was really excited about the ideas that were talked about for season 4, and I think if I was to speculate about it and it went on the internet, it might not be very helpful to people … Anything I say often gets picked up and circulated, and I just want to make sure I don’t give any false hope.”
One thing Cox was clear about was that he would be absolutely game for being Murdock again: “Oh my God, yeah […] I don’t know how this would happen, but maybe one day we could pick up the baton and do it again.”
