Bride does something shocking to her mom’s old wedding dress as a ‘surprise,’ and people on TikTok don’t think the mother is happy
A wedding dress is something of a sentimental item. While the bride may never wear it again, it is an important symbol of what was no doubt a very special day; for many, it’s one of their most cherished possessions, and with good reason. However, a woman online has got the internet talking after she “surprised” her mother by cutting up and repurposing her wedding dress to use for her own wedding.
The video, which has been reposted across numerous social sites such as TikTok, shows the mother’s reaction after recognizing the dress her daughter is wearing as her dress, but with a few modifications. Although the original video appears to have disappeared, many content creators have reacted to the controversial video.
Wedding dresses are expensive, so upcycling an older dress may make sense to some. However, some creators have accused the daughter of ruining her mother’s dress with her alterations, and their followers seem to agree. TikToker, “Ashleespeaks3.0” claimed that the mother was “not happy about that.”
In the video, the mother appears shocked, although it’s difficult to tell whether she is elated or horrified by what her daughter has done to her dress. She can be heard saying, “That’s my wedding dress she cut all up!” Ashlee claims that the mother “had no clue that was happening.”
The mother’s response has viewers divided
While Ashlee insisted that the mother was upset over the alterations, not everyone was convinced. One commenter claimed that the video had been taken out of context and that, in the full clip, the mother “says it looks so much better “without those awful sleeves.” They also claimed that the dress had been “donated” and that the daughter had “saved” it to surprise her.
Another commenter said the additional context “makes this 100% different.” However, as the original video seems to have been taken down, it’s difficult to verify the backstory.
In the caption, which can be seen in Ashlee’s video, the bride mentions that she called up her mother-in-law and “asked her to completely alter my mom’s wedding dress,” but there is no mention of the dress ever being donated.
Other viewers were certain that the daughter was in the wrong for altering the dress without her mom’s permission. One commenter wrote, “She was dead wrong for butchering that dress like that,” adding that the mom “definitely hated it.” Another agreed, writing, “She hates it. She ran away.” Some also criticized the look of the wedding dress, saying it now looked “tacky.”
Others claimed that the daughter should have obtained permission from her mom before doing anything, while one person claimed they wouldn’t have made such drastic alterations even with permission from the mom.
