It’s going to be difficult to care about today’s Academy Award nominations when one of the best-loved actors around has passed away. Alan Rickman, at 69 years old, has died of cancer.

My personal Rickman love began with Kevin Smith’s Dogma, wherein he fittingly played God’s mouthpiece with his amazing voice. He’s had so many amazing, memorable roles—Severus Snape in Harry Potter, Hans Gruber in Die Hard, the voice of Marvin the robot in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest, the worst guy in Love Actually, and many more.

The BBC reports that a statement from Rickman’s family read,

The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Everyone will surely have their own Rickman favorite to watch today in mourning, but here’s a compilation of his time as Severus Snape that we have a bit of a hunch most of you will appreciate:

Rest in peace, Alan Rickman.
