After claiming all Iranian leaders were dead, Trump pulls off a 360 and changes his story

While Donald Trump continues to face opposition from Americans over his actions towards Iran, he is making some bold claims about ongoing operations, most of which are quite contradictory. On Monday, Trump took to Truth Social to announce that he was temporarily halting attacks on Iran for five days because he was having “good” and “productive” talks with the country’s officials and wanted to see where things would go.

Trump’s remarks on the subject come just days after he claimed during a conference that the US had no one to talk to in Iran because they had all been wiped out by the US. So, was he lying then, or is he lying now? Nobody can tell.

Trump had said that everything in Iran was “gone”

In a video circulating on social media, including X (formerly Twitter), Trump is seen stating that the US has no one to negotiate or make deals with in Iran because they were all killed. This video is from a Friday press conference where Trump discussed the US escalation in Iran and the current stage of the situation.

His exact words were, “We’re having a hard time. We want to talk to them, and there’s nobody to talk to. We have nobody to talk to. And you know what, we like it that way. Their navy’s gone. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is all gone. It’s all gone. Their radar is all gone. Their leaders are all gone. The next set of leaders is all gone, and the next set of leaders is mostly gone. Now, nobody wants to be a leader over there anymore.” Adding to the conversation, Trump also said that the US was struggling because they wanted to negotiate with Iranian officials, but “there was nobody to talk to.”

Trump says he is in discussions with Iran to try to ease tensions

Trump on Monday said he is trying to resolve the conflict between the US and Iran. An important point to remember here is that the US attacked Iran on February 28, 2026, after teaming up with Israel, and killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The whole operation was based on the belief that Iran was developing nuclear weapons and planning to use them against the US and other countries. As the US and Israel attacked Iran’s leaders and targeted their energy sources, Iran retaliated by attacking US bases around the world and Israel.

Regarding ongoing talks with Iran, Trump wrote on his Truth Social post, “I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East.” He also said, “based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the department of war to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.”
