A ‘Walking Dead’ star just created a ‘Resident Evil’ short film, and fans are saying it’s better than Zach Cregger’s blockbuster hit

It's definitely got the look and feel of Resident Evil 7 down

The new Resident Evil movie from esteemed horror director Zach Cregger has divided fans of the franchise. While many praised the film’s fresh take and adherence to the overall vibe of the games, others were hoping for a more faithful adaptation, and now, it seems they’ve gotten their wish in the form of a 20-minute fan film from The Walking Dead actor Chandler Riggs.

Riggs, who is known to most of his fans as Carl Grimes from The Walking Dead, dropped the short film titled “Biohazard”, which he directed, wrote, and starred in. It also features fellow Walking Dead alum Jason Douglas as Jack Baker. The 20-minute-long feature adapts the first few hours of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard into a relatively well-made, well-shot, and well-acted fan film.

In the short, we see Riggs in the role of protagonist Ethan, sitting at a table in the Baker residence with Jack, Marguerite, and Lucas in what is a pretty faithful adaptation of a scene from the game. The set design is impressive too, and fans have commended the overall attention to detail.

Fans pit the two Resident Evil films against each other

Of course, this being the internet, Riggs’ passion project soon became something for Resident Evil fans to bicker over. Fans compared it to the recent, big-budget, Hollywood adaptation from Zach Cregger that received heaps of praise when it hit theaters last month.

A vocal minority that criticized Cregger’s version for straying too far from the source material has since come out of the woodwork to crown Riggs’ version as proof that a faithful Resident Evil adaptation could work on the big screen and that it could be even better than what Cregger gave us.

“Thank you Chandler Riggs for proving that making a GOOD lore accurate Resident Evil movie is not that hard,” one account on X wrote. Others heaped praise on the actor for what is undeniably a great fan-film. However, not everyone agreed with pitting the two Resident Evil films against each other, least of all Riggs himself.

In an interview with IGN, Riggs discussed his reason for making the film in the first place: “I was just dying to see a good, true-to-the-game live-action adaptation of Resident Evil.” When it came to Cregger’s version, Riggs praised the director’s decision to go in his own direction: “It’s impossible to please everybody, you know?”

Unlike the vocal fans who were critical of Cregger’s adaptation, Riggs admitted he would love to work with the horror director on a future adaptation should Cregger ever choose to return to the franchise, although based on Cregger’s experience this year, that doesn’t seem likely.
