A Patient Asked Her Nurse to Document Her Death. She Saw People in Her Last Moments: ‘See You Later’
She said someone was coming to get her.
Pain can be relieved by drugs, but Jay Fernando (@sjayfernando), a nurse, said his dying patient, Marie, refused any medication in her last moments. As a scientist, Marie wanted Fernando to record her death.
“I once had a patient who told me everything until the moment she passed—what was happening to her, her body—and what she told me has haunted me until this day, five years later,” Fernando told TikTok. The woman, whom he called Marie, was “one of the nicest” patients he’s had. Fernando has talked about his other patients before, but he fondly stayed in her room to learn from her.
“Marie was devoted to God, but she was also a scientist, and she wanted to let the whole world know what was happening to her as she was passing away,” Fernando claimed. It may seem morbid, but he was fulfilling his patient’s last wish, like a mime putting on an act at her deceased client’s funeral. Fernando noted that even though Marie experienced pain during her death, she refused to take drugs to ease her suffering.
“I was on her right side, holding her hand, and her family was on the left, and we were kind of coaxing her through the pain,” Fernando explained. Marie’s breathing gradually became labored, and, to note, Fernando claimed she had a “severe” respiratory diagnosis.
Death was quick, but the patient was able to tell them all she saw
“She was starting to have labored breathing and gurgles in her throat. So between every breath, she would have trouble saying words,” the nurse said. Nevertheless, he continued to listen to the woman, observing her last moments as requested.
“There goes my legs, guys. When you start to pass away, you’re going to go through this too. You’re gonna lose senses in your legs,” the nurse recalled Marie’s words. Then, Marie’s vision faded. Fernando claimed that even though her eyes were open, Marie could no longer see anything.
“And then she starts to say she sees things. She says she sees lights, pretty colors, so many pretty colors. And then she says she sees people, and that a light is approaching,” Fernando detailed. But others, like this woman from Ontario, didn’t see lights during her near-death experience—she kept running until she landed in a different part of town. Then again, unlike the woman from Ontario, Marie was unmedicated and cognizant until her last breath.
“They’re coming, guys, they’re coming to get me,” Fernando said, quoting Marie’s words. Fernando added that Marie’s grip started to loosen, and her complexion was starting to become more ashen. He said her final words were, “Okay, bye guys, see you later.” After that, Fernando said Marie went unconscious. The nurse left the room to give the family some space to grieve. After 20-30 minutes, Marie passed away.
“After going through this experience with Marie, it really changed the way I thought about spirituality and the afterlife,” Fernando said. However, he didn’t elaborate. Nevertheless, he told the story to let others know about Marie because he thinks she would have wanted the world to know. But death is also an affair that involves those who’ve been left behind. While crime scene cleaners aren’t in charge of the beyond, this ex-cleaner got to see everything else that happens after a person passes away.
