Woman Orders for Her Family of Eleven at a McDonald’s Drive-Thru. She Says It’s No Big Deal: ‘Please Use the App for Large Orders’
Should customers place large orders at the drive-thru?
Mercedes Lynn (@mercedeslynnnn8), a mother from a family of eleven, came from a local state fair. She posted about her family’s huge McDonald’s drive-thru order on TikTok, and social media is divided.
“After a long day at the state fair, this was just easier,” Mercedes said in the caption of her viral TikTok clip. She started her order with eight McDouble Meal Deals, which was followed by a three-second pause from the employee. Mercedes chose ranch and ketchup sauces for all eight meals.
“And for all eight of them, we’ll do orange Hi C,” Mercedes said for the drinks. When asked if she’d like to add more to her order, she asked the fast food worker to customize six of the McDoubles.
“Out of those eight McDoubles, can six of them have no pickles and no onions?” The mom of nine said, adding that she also wanted a Fillet O’Fish meal with an orange Hi C. She paid $61.30 in total and got her order. Nothing was out of the ordinary, except that Mercedes placed an unusually large drive-thru order. Nevertheless, the video went viral online and sparked backlash from several social media users, who thought Mercedes was inconsiderate of others.
Social media rage over a drive-thru video
One comment emphasized, “PLEASE USE THE APP FOR LARGE ORDERS.” Through the McDonald’s app, the restaurant can have ample time to prepare a large order. While there is no policy against taking large orders at the drive-thru, families or groups are encouraged to order via the app for convenience. Moreover, the McDonald’s app accrues points for its users, with a large order gaining more points, which can later be used to redeem a meal. Conversely, they can also go into the restaurant and order in there to prevent congesting the drive-thru.
Another social media user wrote, “Drive thru is for a QUICK ORDER.” Other social media users believe that drive-thrus are fast-paced and that Mercedes held up the line because of her order.
She defended her McDonald’s trip
Mercedes acknowledged the backlash she got and responded with a follow-up video. “I think our family deserves to be able to go through the drive-thru, too. And we don’t eat at McDonald’s that often, so I don’t want another app clogging up my phone, taking up space,” Mercedes said in her family’s defense. She argued that the McDonald’s trip was a last-minute idea.
She continued, “And so, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.” Mercedes explained that she knows that because her family is large, some accommodations have to be made. She also disclosed that some restaurants charged them a group tax. Nevertheless, Mercedes believes her family still has a right to buy from the drive-thru window.
Some commenters agreed with Mercedes in her follow-up. One commenter wrote, “Drive thru is for convenience, not speed. It isn’t the express lane. People are just entitled.”
But other social media users agreed to disagree, with one commenter saying, “Is it illegal? No. Is it impolite? Yes.” Other self-proclaimed fast-food workers also weighed in, with one pointing out it’s “weird” to choose drive-thru when there is a line of cars behind Mercedes. Another said that as an ex-fast-food worker, they are expected to deliver food within a certain time limit. Regardless, the McDonald’s app isn’t the only platform large families can order from, as seen with this mysterious Massachusetts DoorDash order involving 19 pizzas and dozens of chickens.
