Maryland Realtor Allegedly Harassed by Elderly Man While Doing Her Job, Who Called 911 on Her for Being ‘Black, Blackity Black’
She was just trying to do her job.
A realtor was in the middle of showing a potential client a property in Columbia, Maryland, when an elderly man living in the area allegedly accused the woman of breaking and entering into a home. Chela (@sheis_chela) shared the incident on TikTok and claimed that the situation escalated to the man dialing 911.
“Today I had the STRANGEST experience while doing my job in Columbia, MD. I was showing a home to a potential client when a man accused me of ‘breaking into the home,’” Chela said in her caption. In the video, the man can be seen using his phone and seemingly taking photos of the license plate of what appeared to be Chela’s car.
Chela moved closer to block her car and repeatedly questioned the man about what he was doing. “I’m walking on my street that I pay taxes for,” the man was heard saying. However, the confrontation didn’t get any better from there.
Elderly man kept questioning Chela on the rental property
“You’re giving very much racist. Cause you’re just harassing me, and I’m trying to show a house,” Chela told the man when he called her a “smarta**.” The man can also be heard questioning Chela about why she was trying to sell the property, which the realtor denied doing.
As the argument continued, Chela warned the man that she would contact the police if he didn’t leave. “You’re really about to piss me off. No, for real. You really need to just mind your own business. Cause I’m about to call the cops on you for harassment,” she said. However, the man pulled out his phone and called 911 first instead.
According to Chela, the man had called the police and claimed she was being aggressive, while allegedly making comments about how young she looked and that the neighborhood was a “drug-free zone.” Chela said that the man had also mentioned her skin color, saying, “While on the phone with 911, he kept saying, ‘She Black, Blackity Black.’”
Viewers sympathized with Chela, with one commenter saying, “Being black is so exhausting.” Others hoped that the man would get slapped with a fine for allegedly weaponizing the police to be racist. “People who falsely call 911 because they are racist should legally have to pay a gigantic fine. Not only for the racism, but also for wasting 1st responders time,” a commenter said.
Maryland police supposedly only gave a warning
Maryland law states that a person is prohibited from knowingly making reports with the intent to deceive using false information. If found guilty of a misdemeanor, the offender may be ordered to pay a fine of up to $500 or be imprisoned for up to six months, or both.
When the situation escalated, Chela said she had requested her previous client to act as a witness because she “couldn’t believe what was happening.” While she was unable to record the interaction, Chela claimed police officers had responded to the man’s call, but not much was done besides a warning directed at the elderly man.
“The police came, and I can say they were very polite as soon as the cop got out [of] the car,” Chela said in the comments. “He knew what was happening and immediately apologized to me.”
According to Chela, the officer had to explain to the man her job as a realtor and that his disturbance was negatively affecting her business. Because of the incident, her clients allegedly decided to pass on the home she was showing.
“If he says anything to me or comes out [of] the home while I’m there, I will be calling the police on him because it’s harassment and I have a job to do,” Chela said. She concluded in her caption, “Imagine being a Black woman simply doing her job and someone deciding you don’t belong there.”
