Her Boss Convinced Her to Work for Pinterest. Then She Got Mobbed: ‘It Took My Career Five Years to Recover From It’
She believes her boss turned on her by sending her off to Pinterest.
As a young professional in corporate America, Shelby (@shelbydidwhattt) told TikTok that her former boss recommended her to Pinterest. She would later regret her decision to move companies.
“I thought this [expletive] was a myth, and it took my career five years to recover from it,” Shelby shared on social media. She told a story about her former boss, whom she considered to be her mentor. Shelby alleged that once she had gotten better at her job, the lady treated her like a threat and “turned” on her.
“Basically, she tricked me into leaving the company. I was young and dumb, and she convinced me we had it so bad there and that she was going to leave too,” Shelby claimed. Some people leave on their own terms, like this woman from California who quit her company after they scolded her over a TikTok skit. But in Shelby’s case, her boss allegedly recommended her to work for Pinterest.
“She helped me get another job at Pinterest, and then she stayed at the company,” she continued. The boss, who was supposed to leave, allegedly stayed at their old company. Shelby claimed that she abandoned $40,000 worth of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), a stock-based employee compensation plan that can later be redeemed after a set period. Because Shelby left early, the stocks allegedly did not vest.
“I walked away from $40,000 in RSUs without realizing that’s what I was doing. She knew I was doing that because she’s my boss and knew I had that money,” Shelby claimed. After two weeks of working at Pinterest, Shelby said her boss’s friend quit the company. By then, she was supposedly alone, navigating a new workplace.
Things took a turn for the worst at Pinterest
“I got mobbed. Google that [expletive] if you don’t know what it is. People unalive themselves over it,” Shelby said. Essentially, she faced alleged workplace bullying at Pinterest.
According to Healthline, workplace mobbing is when a group of individuals repeatedly target a co-worker. The act is characterized by emotional abuse and harassment, which lead to a toxic work environment. Individuals who experience workplace mobbing are often attacked and isolated by the group. As a result of the consistent exclusion, the target might quit their role. In extreme cases, the United Nations reports that people can die from workplace harassment.
“And I know it was a setup, because her little friend who hired me never checked on me about how it’s going,” Shelby alleged. In the end, Shelby said she quit Pinterest, but still struggled to move forward.
“After Pinterest, I bounced from one bad job to bad job. I advanced financially, but the experiences in these places? It’s deceptively hard to find a good job in corporate America, especially if you are of a certain demographic,” Shelby commented, panning the camera to her appearance. She implied that navigating the job market as a black woman had been difficult.
“I did land on my feet. I have my dream job now,” Shelby clarified. Nevertheless, her experience came with hard-earned wisdom. “It’s not just that people will compete with you or step on you to try to get ahead. They will actively ruin you if they feel like you deserve it for whatever reason,” she continued. Shelby advised others to either work for themselves or for someone they know and trust. While some cave from the pressures of the corporate world, others like this woman fled to Belgium to get away from her overbearing boss.
