Michigan Mother Decluttered Her Home. She Now Feels Like a Different Person: ‘Less is More’

In a world filled with ads, Kenadee Ferguson (@kenferg) from Michigan opted to reduce. She shared that she dedicated time last year to decluttering her home. Now, it looks like a minimalist’s dream.
“I have spent the last year getting rid of 50% of my stuff,” Ferguson told TikTok. She says that the items are now gone, but the shift did not distress her. Instead, she says she feels like a “new” person.
“I went through every single cupboard, every single drawer—my whole closet, my garage, my shed,” she claimed. Ferguson said she lives in a small house with her family of four. With fewer items at home, she says that it has been “easier” to manage.
“Less is more,” Ferguson said before showing viewers around her house. When she opened her cupboards, there were only five plates and four glass tupperwares. There was no abundance of Stanley cups, as is common for those who’ve fallen into the trend of overcollecting. In fact, there was no excessive plate collection in the cupboard. It was just enough for the family, a far cry from this California man’s cabinet filled with plates for all seasons.
She kept what she needed
“This is all that’s ever in there. There’s usually five more plates right here, and that’s it,” Ferguson proudly showed. She claimed that she had a total of ten plates. Although there was a box on the top shelf, the mother clarified that it contained emergency candles but no additional dishes. Ferguson added, “I don’t need a bajillion Tupperwares falling out on me.”
“This is my baking cupboard,” she said, opening another cabinet. It was starkly in contrast to restocking haul videos, featuring influencers who fill their pantries with a plethora of ingredients and spices. “This is all that I need. It has powdered sugar. It has all my spices that I use,” she claimed. The pantry also contained birthday decor and some cake decorating items, but they were neatly stacked on one side of the cabinet.
Ferguson went on to show her lazy Suzan in another cupboard, featuring her other hidden kitchen appliances. She said, “I have a cake stand, a salad spinner, my two different blenders, and a toaster.” Some people might eagerly buy the latest home appliance, only to realize that it’s incompatible or useless to their living situation. One couple even said that after buying a Samsung refrigerator from Best Buy, they ended up panic-buying a Whirlpool that came with a host of installation issues. But for Ferguson, she’s dedicated to living out her philosophy of less is more.
Why people hesitate in decluttering their homes
“I think it can feel uncomfortable to get rid of stuff because we live in such a consumer world,” Ferguson said. She admitted that she “loves” stuff, adding, “I love going to Marshalls, I love going to HomeGoods, like, I love things.” Ferguson also said she loved the “high” of acquiring new stuff but found peace in having less.
“Have what you need, use what you have. And that’s that,” she ended. Ferguson isn’t alone in trying to downsize her consumption. Another woman who used to be from Texas has taken her minimalism journey to the next level by living on a cruise ship for three years, having less space than most people who own homes do. Like Ferguson, she also had a difficult time decluttering her life.
